Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
It is a big fish, with a typically ferocious shark-like look. It swims through warm ocean waters looking for prey, such as baby sharks, seals, other fish, and even sea turtles. This fish is known for having spots sometimes, or stripes like a tiger. What is it? A tiger shark! And as de la Bedoyere concludes, tiger sharks are amazing animals! These large ocean dwellers swim in deeper water during the daytime and shallow water close to shore at night. Gills help them breathe and fins help them swim—which they do constantly. According to the author, a tiger shark's big eyes and nose help it see and smell potential snacks underwater. The book features a life-size picture of a tiger shark's tooth, and young readers can see how sharp it is. Along with simple text and colorful photo illustrations, the book outlines hunting behavior, eating preferences (for example, along with its regular prey, these sharks can eat dead animals it may find in the water and even garbage), and reproduction. Pups, sometimes eighty in one litter, are born alive. Wow! Young readers who love great white sharks because of their size and sharp teeth are bound to like tiger sharks, too, after reading this book. This book includes a glossary. However, as with other books in the series, the contrast with dark pictures and black text could be better—bright reading light will help. Part of the "Discover Sharks" series.
