This is a great adventure book for kids and their parents who are not too old to still enjoy a rollicking yarn filled with pirates, George Washington and the American revolution, Sopwith Camels, and spying against the Nazis in World War II. How exactly, I'm sure you are asking, can you fit all that into one book. Well it helps if you have a working model of Leonardo da Vinci's, Tempus Machina, a time machine. Nick McIver, our twelve year old hero, is game to try anything. He probably gets this trait from his dad, who was a heroic flying ace in the RAF during the First World War. Along with his sister Kate, his friend Gunner, who had served in the Navy and some other help along the way, Nick leads us from one hair breath escape to another in a continuous romp that will leave you asking for more. This is book two of Nick McIver's adventures in time. Hopefully not the last.

Ted Bell is surely one of the best writers for both young people (ages 10 and up) as well as their parents and grandparents. The important lessons he teaches in these books without preaching puts both this book and the previous one, Nick of Time, on a level with Tom Sawyer and other important literature for all times. Reading the book at the same time as your child will result in many deep and moving conversations about character, courage, integrity and self-respect and self-discipline. Ted Bell knows how to get you fromt he first page, and he never lets go until the very end!

Perfect pick for 9-12 year olds wanting adventure! Ted Bell writes for adults about spies and pirates and he is the perfect choice for young readers as well. Nick McIver is helping gain intelligence for Winston Churchill in 1940. Captain William Blood, pirate, is gathering the pirate community in the islands in 1781. Add a time machine and you have one rip roaring story combining fantasy time travel, history and high adventure. Loved it and can't wait for the second book in this series-

In 1940 the Nazis invade the British Channel Islands. To repel the enemy, teenager Nick McIver teaches himself to fly an obsolete WWI fighter plane that he had found in an abandoned barn. From the air, barnstorming Nick photographs minelayers and patrol boats during the day and conducts bombing raids over Nazi airfields at night. Meanwhile his enemy pirate Captain Billy Blood wants possession of Nick's time machine. Using his own, he travels to Greybeard Island where he kidnaps Nick's sister Kate, and takes her back to 1781 Port Royal, Jamaica; but he leaves Nick a message that in exchange for his sibling he wants the time machine. Traveling to the late eighteenth century, Nick of Time learns of a plot that could result in Washington's defeat as Blood has amassed an invincible armada. Fighting in two wars over a century and half apart, heroic Nick hopes to be on time to save his sister and for his side to win twice. Incredibly fast-paced with over the top happenstances, this lighthearted fun teenage pulp fiction is very entertaining though not deep in either era except when blood and tomatoes mix as Nick battles The Time Pirate. Ted Bell has written two solid children s books that shall endure for time to come! This bi- series ( In the Nick of Time and The Time Pirate ) are so full of good history and great historical and fictional characters to match, a parent has no need to fear their children getting wrong ideas in any form! To be read " from " and used to read " to " someone ( young and old alike) these are fun and exciting from the first page to the last!

The Time Pirate is an exceptional sequel to Nick of Time. So much adventure! So much intrigue! As a note to parents: The story sometimes gets pretty violent, especially considering that a 12-year-old boy is shooting down Nazis from his tiny plane. There is warfare and battles that take place. The descriptions of these scenes are never gory, but provide a good enough illustration in your head for you to fully understand the violence taking place. Halfway through, I felt so much despair for the characters -- it pulled at my heartstrings. The author kept a amazing storyline going. In fact, a wonderful plot twist took place and transported me (and Nick, of course) back in time where more action would take place. We're talking about travelling the globe, and meeting important historical figures! Love this book. Perhaps even more than the first book. I hope the author writes another sequel. Soon, please?
