On Timeless Journey, legendary soul singer Patti LaBelle proves that age ain't nothin' but a number. At 60, the vocal powerhouse can still hold her own against such younger divas as Beyoncé, Mary J., and Christina. After all, the latter's Grammy-winning remake of the LaBelle classic "Lady Marmalade" couldn't hold an octave next to the explosive, funk-rock original. Unlike 2000's power ballad–driven When a Woman Loves, Timeless is heavy on mid-tempo contemporary R&B in the vein of Be Yourself's Prince-produced "Yo, Mister" and Flame's rousing "When You Think About Love" (a.k.a. the Patti, Patti song) -- most notably on the catchy, acoustic guitar–laced "Mm, Mm, Mm" and the sunny single "New Day." The album also delves into neo-soul by way of the sultry slow jam "Hear My Cry," featuring British duo Floetry, and the string-accented "Finally Got the Nerve," which incorporates the taut plucking of hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari. And lest fans forget just how dynamic Miss Patti's vocals are, she offers the soaring, gospel-inspired "Unpredictable," the string-laden pop ballad "2 Steps Away," and the Latin-tinged "When You Smile," featuring a flaming guitar solo by Carlos Santana, hot percussion by Sheila E., and vocals by Marc Anthony sound-alike Andy Vargas. By making such a flawless album at this stage in her career, LaBelle shows that her Timeless Journey is far from reaching its conclusion.

Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly - Kristina Feliciano
Timeless Journey glimmers with acid-jazz and neo-soul rhythms, and LaBelle is given sassy lyrics worthy of her diva self. [B+]

Once again, Patti brings it home. Another wonderful album showing that she refuses to slow down! This album is very smooth, positive and has everything a Patti fan would has come to expect. Patti is so truly genuine in all she does and you can feel it in her songs -- every one!

Patti's "Timeless Journey" cd is HOT! It showcases her musical range and multiformity. We get a fresher sounding Patti with a taste of her r&b/gospel musical background, miixed with the sounds of today's everchanging music in tastefully put together. No, it's not the typical sound of the old school Patti, but it's 100% on point and she never seize to amaze me. I will continue to await what's next for Patti, because she always come with something BETTER! This is a must have cd.

I love this CD. Patti's voice is delicious and totally sublime. Songs like "More than Material', 'It's Time' and 'Something More" make me feel goosebumps and are repeated again and again. This CD chronicles the life of a woman with all of the highs and lows. Even with the lows, Patti is still positive and always honest and true. This is one of the best CD's I have heard in a very long time.
