Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-4-In this installment in the series, Horace Splattly and his buddies head out to the annual school campout. Things look bleak when he must bunk with the five-year-old boys and a sadistic teacher. Before long, Clownosauruses, mysterious monsters that steal all of the laughs from their human victims, threaten the whole shebang. Horace saves the day, aided by two magical cupcakes. With plenty of spit and toilet paper, the Cupcaked Crusader seems ready to compete with "Captain Underpants" (Scholastic) in the bathroom humor category. However, this book offers cruelty where Dav Pilkey manages to infuse charm. There's one ridiculous plot twist after another, providing ample opportunity for all of the characters, adults as well as children, to be as clueless as they are mean-spirited. Black-and-white sketches underscore the cartoonish aspects of the story. The audience for plot-driven silly adventures continues to grow, but children deserve more than the Cupcaked Crusader.-Pat Leach, Lincoln City Libraries, NE Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
