This is where all the playing around with beats Ani's been doing for the last few years pays off. With TO THE TEETH, the prolific indie-folk heroine has carved out a sense of groove that's as bold and idiosyncratic as the do-for-self stance of her lyrics and her economic self-determination. Though the album's sound is still mostly defined by her torrents of words and her guitar's acoustic rattle and strum, DiFranco's rhythms have gotten funky enough that the guest appearances by The Symbol Guy and veteran James Brown saxophonist Maceo Parker are treats rather than surprises. (She seems to have been taking lessons from Prince's willingness to mess with vocals, too -- check out the scatting gasps in "Wish I May" or the way she half-yodels the bridge of "Freakshow.") DiFranco's songs are separating the personal and the political more and more: The title track and "Hello Birmingham" savage, respectively, the NRA and abortion-clinic violence, but most of these tracks are quirky, wry observations of how people relate to each other or to being alone. And her words are becoming as surprising and supple as her new rhythms, as when she sings about driving through the dark, "trying hard to resist/Sleep's first kiss."

Ani Difranco is a wonderfully brilliant artist. She is an inspiration to women everywhere. Ani has opened my eyes to all of the beautiful oppression in our society and has introduced me to an empowering new perspective. Ani is a goddess.
You've seen artists play their guitar while they are upside down. You've seen piano players play their piano with their elbows, nose and even their butts. Now watch Ani make an entire album using just her teeth----writen with her teeth, performed with her teeth, sung with her teeth. As a follow up, Ani's next album will be done entirely with her left foot. Of course it will sound much like her "to the teeth " album. But heck. As long as there are suckers out here buying her slop, ani will contine making music with all her body parts
Ani DiFranco defy's the rules again in the spell binding musical albulm. She takes you through a trip that will leave you begging for more. Whether you are a devoted Ani fan or just thinking of checking her out - you will be singing to these tunes for hours!! This is a must for everybody
nothing like ani has ever done before! BRILIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ani has done it again. This CD will go through the roof, over the clouds, out of orbit, cross the galaxy and right into a black hole where it belongs. There even the smallest, infintesimal residues of her sound will be crunched into one tight garbage pile. It is my hope that Ani holds tightly on to her last note and takes the ride so that we may be spared any further punishment. From a "FAN" that would like to help blow her toward the trip
