At a comfy little desk
Stacy Nyikos chews on pencils
And scribbles silliness
Stacy has written many award-winning books for children, a number of which feature ocean animals. She holds an MFA in writing from Vermont College landlocked and lives with her husband, two children, and dog in the wilds of Oklahoma also landlocked. Her love of the ocean is a happy coincidence.
Shawn Sisneros comes from landlocked territory but loves the ocean, too. He studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His favorite medium is oil…or watercolor..or pencil…pretty much anything he can draw with. When Shawn isn't trying out new mediums, he can be found exploring the jungles of Chicago. In a sandy little nest
With a happy little shout
Toby cracked apart his shell
Kerploppled headfirst out.
Empty eggs lay all around him.
Their were tracks across the ground.
But the other turtle hatchlings
Were nowhere to be found.

A sunny, optimistic imagining of a newborn sea turtle's first lone voyage, Toby the book (just like Toby the character) exemplifies key elements of the classic children's tale: innocence and persistence; trust and resourcefulness; and a dogged determination to reach a safe haven where plenitude abounds. Nyikos then marries these qualities with a more contemporary childlike openness and passion for the sights, tastes, and sounds in which Toby immerses himself, and leaves us, and him, at peace, having found his place in the world.
For anyone who's been fascinated with the amazing journey that cute little sea turtles have to take when they hatch to make it to the ocean, TOBY is perfect. I admit that while reading the book, it found a special place in my heart. We watched the sea turtles be released into the ocean a couple years back at Padre Island National Seashore, and I couldn't help but think of those darling little turtles as I read TOBY. It's fun. It's cute. What more could you want?
