Amie is ready to give up on her marriage when husband Allen shows up at the air terminal with his pregnant lover. Fearful she will be unable to adequately provide for her three sons on her own, she opts to give him another chance. When she learns he is still up to his tricks, she takes the boys and moves out of town. Having lived a dull life for a year, her divorced friend Joan introduces her to Mat, also separated and lonely. They fall in love and plan to be married. Meanwhile, as the boys get older, they become involved with drugs and alcohol. To save her sons, Amie goes back to Allen, thinking the boys need discipline from both parents. It is not a reconciliation, nor do they share a bed. When the youngest finishes high school eight years later, she moves out alone. During this time neither she nor Mat have been in contact. When Joan learns both are free, she tells Mat. Will they resume where they left off eight years ago?
