Reviewed by Kathryn Bennett for Readers' Favorite Token Huntress by Kia Carrington-Russell takes us into a world where the sun has been dimmed and the year is 2341. Vampires have what seems like control of the world, and are able to hunt their prey in a world that no longer is fully lit by the sun. Humankind finds itself in a society ruled by the vampires and other supernaturals who squabble over who gets to hunt the remaining humans. The Hunter guild works hard to stay ahead of the Vampire Council. Esmore is a Huntress who has surpassed any expectations placed on her at the young age of 18. For all her strength and leadership, Esmore has darkness within her and that darkness finds itself drawn to the surface by a vampire. I have been reading various vampire novels for as long as I can remember. I cut my teeth on Anne Rice and have continued ever since. With that said, lately vampire novels just have not seemed as good; they follow too many tropes and have become mostly YA to a large extent. Enter Kia Carrington-Russell and her fresh, sexy style of writing that hooked me right into this book! Esmore is a tough heroine, but she also allows you to see her emotions. I love that about her. Sexy Chase, well, I mean need I say more then sexy? This book may have some of the familiar twists you see in vampire works, but they quickly turn you down another path and leave you wondering what will happen next. Simply put, I adored reading this book and I adored the sensual, sexy nature of it. Vampires are back and better then ever in my mind. I very much look forward to whatever comes next! Fantastic just fantastic. I have not enjoyed a new vampire novel this much in a long time.

Reviewed by Benjamin Ookami for Readers' Favorite You’d know that defeating a vampire that is more than one hundred and fifty years old won’t come easy if you’ve read Kia Carrington-Russell’s paranormal romance offering entitled Token Huntress. The technology age has ended. It is now the age of survival in a world where humans are sitting ducks while vampires and sabers are sought after by hunters, a result of scientific experiments gone right, or wrong, depending on which side you’re on. The token hunter, or huntress, is in charge of an entire raid team of killers with special gifts. Esmore wears the title of token huntress, but she is not like other hunters. While other hunters have gifts and hunter eyes, she doesn’t. She is special in her own way – a Council vampire named Chase has the answer to that one. Through Esmore’s first person narrative, I was introduced to Esmore’s life as a hunter and a romantic complication in the form of James, a hunter male who wants Esmore to leave her hunting for a life with him. Chase, the Council vampire, proves to be the exact opposite of James, but he is a vampire and readers already know what Esmore can do with a couple of arrows. I’m a fan of surprising plot twists at the end and the author dishes out a lot. Throwing in superpowers and mindless monsters, Carrington-Russell has created a vampire infested world that is the most interesting I’ve ever encountered. I would like to explore more of it in Token Vampire and see how Esmore grows with the truths that have been revealed to her here.

Reviewed by Grant Leishman for Readers' Favorite It is now the year 2341 and humanity has all but destroyed the beautiful planet known as Earth. No longer are humans the dominant life force on this planet. In Token Huntress by Kia Carrington-Russell, they are usually mere impotent bystanders to the battle that rages between the vampires and the hunters. Hunters have evolved from humans and are programmed to protect that species from the depredations of the vampires, which requires them to ruthlessly kill all vampires they encounter. A young huntress, Esmore, the most skilled in her Hunter’s Guild, is promoted to the role of leader, the Token Huntress, even above those older and more experienced than herself. She leads by example, determined to destroy all vampires, but an encounter with a handsome and strangely compelling vampire, Chase, will change her world forever, as she begins a voyage of self-discovery into what is her true self. It can be quite difficult for an author to come up with a new spin on the classic good versus evil concept around vampires, but in Token Huntress, Carrington-Russell does this wonderfully well. What I particularly liked about this story was the author’s ability to show how easily the lines between two different groups can become hardened and entrenched, simply by what we are told from birth. Esmore finds out, despite her misgivings and life’s mission to destroy vampires, that all in not necessarily what she had been led to believe in vampire society. I loved the developing relationship between Esmore and Chase, especially the way Chase toyed with her emotions, knowing that deep down Esmore knew she was supposed to hate him with a passion, yet somehow she knew she couldn’t. I really enjoyed this fresh, innovative story and was pleased when it became obvious we would hear more of Chase, Esmore and their clan. An excellent read for lovers of the genre and for all readers.

Reviewed by Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers' Favorite Token Huntress by Kia Carrington-Russell is a futuristic paranormal romance. It’s the year 2341 and the sun's light has long since dimmed. Vampires thrive and stalk the world and a new society rules, a society of vampires, supernatural hunters, and the few humans that are left to fight over. Esmore is a Token Huntress and, at just 18 years old, she is a fearless team leader, pursuing the enemy with no let-up. Esmore has a problem, though, she can’t repress the feelings that grow inside of her. She is being pressured into a marriage she doesn’t want, and when she gives in to a vampire that she just can’t keep away from, reality takes a different turn, an evil and lustful turn. Life – or death – may never be the same again! Token Huntress by Kia Carrington-Russell is definitely not a story for the faint hearted, nor is it one for under 18’s, given the descriptive nature of the sexual scenes. This story intrigued me; most vampire stories follow the same pattern but, teamed up with a paranormal twist and set in the future as well, this was something quite different. It started well and it just got better! The characters are developed so realistically that you could almost believe that you know them, that these people walk the earth with you, although given what they are, you most likely wouldn’t want that! The plot is full of action, romance, tears and rage, and it stalks along as relentlessly as the Huntress does. The book flowed naturally and I was a little disappointed when it ended – because I wasn’t ready for it to end. Is there going to be more? I truly hope so!

I was pretty impressed with this book. It has a original concept and great story building qualities. I mean come on a vampire apocalypse yes please! It has a fast paced plot line that will keep you captivated until the last page. Once I got through the first few chapters I had a hard time putting it down. This is the first book in the series and I am anxiously waiting the second book. If you like a hot, original, fast paced dystopian then this book is for you. This is the first book I have read from this author but it definitely won't be the last.

Token Huntress is the first book in a series written by Kia Carrington-Russell. As with all of her books Kia has written another fantastic tale. The story revolves around Esmore a hunter. She was born and raised in the Hunter’s Giuld. Since she was born she has trained as a hunter to kill Vampires and Sabers (wild, uncontrollable vampires). On her 18th birthday she loses the glow in her eyes that shows she is a hunter. All hunters come into their special powers on their 18th birthdays and understand their place in the Guild. She has been in a relationship with James for 2 years and is trying to understand her changes in her feelings for him since her mother died. Not to log ago Esmore was promoted to Token Huntress and has her own raid team. They are sent out to the city to look for signs of the Vampire stronghold called the Council. While there the team is attached by Sabers and loses 2 of the team. While fighting to save Fam, an apprentice who was killed during an Saber ambush, Esmore was grazed by a poison dart shot by a mysterious man. She later has a dream of this tall handsome vampire and learn his name is Chase. The team makes it back to the Guild but Esmore is under suspicion from their leader Campture and is taken into custody. Dillian, a fellow hunter, has a vision that the raid team needs to go back to the city to find the Council and Esmore is to lead them. The team is ambushed by the Council and Esmore is blown up with a grenade. Chase swoops in, saves her and passes her off as his “pet”. The story continues to take many more twist after this as Esmore learns that she is half vampire and Chase is her familiar along with sharing Chases ability ones they have been “connected”. The ending is exciting and full of action but also leaves you hanging for the next installment. Kia has been able to create an environment where the characters come alive. You are able to feel the characters inner turmoil’s, love, sadness, loss and insecurities. I highly recommend this book.

The darkness within me...   His touch ceased my rage quickly.  WHEW!  & WOW!!  This is one FANGTASTICALLY ENTHRALLING book!  I wanted to read this book for 2 reasons - Kia & Vampires! I was disappointed in...NOTHING!!  This is such a rich story steeped with a deep history, multi-faceted characters and exceptional scene/realm/world building that makes it all feel so real!  I felt like I was a part of the story, partially because it is told in first person, but also because of Kia's phenomenal flair for storytelling!  It all just reaches out and pulls you right in making you feel like you are right there seeing, hearing, experiencing everything & living with Esmore, and the further into the story you get, the more you come to understand her like she is a part of you, or rather you are a part of her since this is HER story!  I found that Esmore was a character that I could relate to in some ways, as well as understand her motives & reasons behind her decisions and actions.  I may not agree with them, but I could see where she was coming from, so to speak.  The descriptive elements only added to the story making it even richer and giving it the depth that has you closing your eyes and picturing it all – the people, the weapons, the living quarters, the training centre, their surroundings, just EVERYTHING!  I was very impressed with the continuity and the attention to detail, but no worries!  It is not overdone nor does it make the story drag or feel dry and wordy.  Having the different species or races, along with all of the different abilities and the variations amongst them was one of many of my favorite features!  I loved all of the unique qualities within the story as well.  I had no idea what was going to happen next, I knew what I wanted to happen, but well, that is another story! LOL  I have read a LOT of paranormal books with at least half of them involving vampires.  I cannot think of any book that was even somewhat similar to Token Huntress!  I hope that Kia enjoyed writing this story as much as I did reading it because I cannot imagine ever wanting to leave Esmore, her world & this series!  In my opinion this all combines as a perfect example of just how brilliant Kia truly is and I look forward to reading her books for many years to come!  I can see numerous awards and #1 books in her future, if Token Huntress is any indication!

Welcome to a future, not a pretty place to be, as the Hunter Guild is all that stands between the remaining humans and the vampires who run rampant over the world. Esmore is a Token Huntress, a superior warrior and leader. Her job is to take her Hunters out, defeat vampire threats and bring in any humans they find. Outwardly cold and brutally demanding, Esmore is a force to be reckoned with, but she will sacrifice anything to keep her team safe, there is no doubt in her heart. Are forces from within her own faction working against her? How deep does the vein of deceit run? When it comes time to stand toe to toe with the enemy, what is happening to Esmore? Is she falling into the dark abyss of the vampire faction? When a powerful vampire council member pulls Esmore in like a homing beacon, what will she uncover? Chase is more than handsome and strong, he is more than the enemy and he makes Esmore’s blood boil. Will she give in to temptation for just a sample of his charm or is there something deeper going on beside wicked lust? I’ve been a fan of Kia Carrington-Russell for a while now, but Token Huntress is my favorite by far! Ms. Carrington-Russell has taken a dystopian world, added supernaturals and a divided and decimated world, shook the dice and rolled a winner! Full of grit, intrigue, danger and passion, each scene feels like what I imagine a post-apocalyptic world to be like, dim, barren and shrouded in a veil of danger as she pits factions against each other in a deadly game of kill or be killed. Her characters are tough, caring, and outwardly appear to be emotionless, but inside, they are raging infernos of heart and passion. Well written, beautifully executed and paced to deliver, highly recommended for that walk on the dark and dangerous side!
