A staggering amount of artwork has been inspired and based upon J.R.R. Tolkien's writing, so I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been to pick just a few dozen to put in this collection. Included are pieces depicting scenes from many of his books, mostly 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings', and 'The Silmarillion', each with a short excerpt from the appropriate text. Many styles, from realism to expresionism, are present, showing many different representations of our favorite characters. I cannot say I like all of them, but none are lacking skill and passion. These artists clearly love their subject, and that counts for a lot in my book. I just would have liked to see more dwarves. Peace.

I'm so amazed by this book that I am speechless. It is so beautiful that I am speechless. It is so amazing how a man can create such a wonderful and epic world. J.R.R. Tolkien was the most brilliant man of our time and always will be (sorry if there's any speeling mistakes :-/)

I think 'ethereal' is the word i would give to Tolkien's works. I have been reading his autobiography (i am working my way through lotr trilogy for ,i think, the third time and the 'Silmarillion') It's amazing what this guy did in the course of his life time. He got two scholarships to King Edward's School. That's enough for me to know he's probably the "best writer in the world!" Do you reckon there's an OSCAR for that? I am begging for volume one of 'the history of middle earth, so wish me luck!!!!!!

I got this book for Christmas and I can not believe the beauty that these artists bring from Tolkien's works. The Lord of the Rings' descriptions are enough to make you see Middle Earth, but the artists that contributed are incredible! Go Tolkien!
