This "field guide" is not as advertised. It is basically a collection of stories seemingly more for entertainment that actual use in the field. There are no pictures to assist with identification and there is very little technical information. This book seems written for more entertainment purpose than actual use. I would not recommend anyone base their knowledge of plants from this book. It seems that if the author does have knowledge of edible and medicinal plants, he is reluctant to supply that knowledge for fear of someone misusing it. I was highly disappointed.

An actual quote from page 44 of this book, "This book is not a field guide to the identification of wild edible or medicinal plants." Just a few pictures of the plants in this book would have made it 1000 times better. I expected more from Tom Brown Jr.

The author recognizes that there are plenty of books available to help you *identify* plants, but little information about how to use the plants - that is where this book steps up to the plate. Through entertaining stories about how the author came to know these plants, he talks about how to use these plants for food, medicine, tools, etc. Though somewhat limited in terms of the number of plants discussed, there is far more detail here than I've seen in any other book on edible or medicinal plants.

This book is one of the first I purchased to help me with wild plants. There is far mor information in this book then just what you can and can not eat. Who knew that there were so many uses for Cattails all through the year?!?! Well written and easy to understand with many of the authors own experiences included. This makes a great companion to all of Tom Brown's other well written and enlightening books!

This is not your average edible plant book.I found it to be more like a series of adventure stories, each one revolving around a particular plant and its usefulness. The stories show how to 'get to know' a plant and really apreciate it.It's fun reading too.
