This book is okay. It isn't fantastic, but it's not bad, either. On the positive side, I really liked the message and the story. Shelby is a sweet girl and is a great example of paying it forward. I like the way she worked hard all summer to create something that would benefit other people. I also really liked Mr. T. He is a wonderful, grandfatherly figure that takes the initiative to spend quality time with a child. On the downside, I'm not sure this would appeal to the target age group. The writing was alright, but it was a little too straight forward. The book also had a lot of filler - passages that didn't really seem to have any purpose. For example, there is a lot of discussion of measurements and if they should stain or paint the boards they were working on. The illustrations were just okay for me. Didn't love them, didn't hate them. Overall, this is a sweet book about an elderly man and a young girl spending their summer making other people's lives better. I think adults will enjoy it more than kids, but you never know.

TOM T'S HAT RACK by Michelle Spry is a delightful Children's Book. A "pay it forward" story, "This simple act of kindness towards others is so simple to do and encourage others to do." A powerful story about helping others, facing challenges and giving back to your community. Beautifully written with beautiful illustrations, deep thought, and engaging characters. A simple act of kindness is what we all want and need from life, along with love. So do a simple act of kindness, then "pay it forward" and the pass the giving along to others. A powerful and compelling story. Fast paced and an excellent message for young and old readers alike. A must for children of all ages. Received for an honest review from the author. My oldest Frugal read this book and then we talked it. This is such a great story that ALL families should read! Shelby Summers spends her summer with her neighbor and adopted grandparents, Tom and Kim Tucker. She has no idea what this summer has in store for her as she spends time with Tom Tucker aka "Mr. T", who has been fighting Cancer. This is a wonderful story, based on a friend of the author, who was also diagnosed with Cancer. As a parent, I love how this book is written about the importance of "Paying it Forward" and not always worrying, "what's in it for me". This is a very easy read and it is very understandable for older children. I highly recommend BOTH parents and older children to read this book!!!! Thank you to Michele Spry for providing me with a review copy of this book.

Mom's Thoughts: Tom's T Hat Rack is a sweet adorable and fun book that brings all the heart-warming feelings we have inside us to the forefront.  You can't help but feel good after reading this book.  This story showcases all the best in human nature and makes you wish for more from the society that surrounds us in reality.  The characters in this book are a special breed indeed.  Shelby is such a sweet little girl that loves and cares about the people around her.  She is always trying to see the good in folks and make their lives even more special.  I think other children could really look up to Shelby in morals and her uplifting spirit.  Tom Tucker is another great character in the story.  He is a wonderful man that has faced many challenges and always remembers to smile as he thinks of others going through his own trials and struggles.  These two together have made a very interesting story come alive teaching us, young and old, the importance of thinking of others instead of always considering "what's in it for me?" I also enjoyed the fact that story was based off a real person.  It is good to know that there is a great part of humanity out there helping people cope with some very dire situations bringing a smile and a hug to them amongst their pain and suffering.  Tom's T Hat Rack is a great way to teach your kids how to pay it forward and make a difference in their hometown.  I highly recommend giving this book a try.  It is a wonderful written story with beautiful illustrations and a fantastic message that everyone can benefit from wholeheartedly.   I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review of it.

Michele pens "Tom T's Hat Rack" in a wonderful story line that shows us how good it feels to pay it forward and to help those who need care. There is also a chapter included in the book where you can list ways to pay it forward yourself. With wonderful illustrations, this book will captivate your child and yourself while reading. As an adult it hooked me right in, and I highly recommend the book to all adults and children between the ages of 7 and 12 years. This review is based on a complimentary copy from the author which was provided for an honest review.

This story is a great story of selflessness and understanding the plight of others.  I constantly challenge my kids to "pay it forward".  There are so many simple ways to do it and truly impact someone's day and maybe even their life.  Shelby was thrilled to help with this "unknown" project.  She wasn't even told what it was until it was almost complete but she knew it would help others and was more than happy to do it with Mr. T.  Even afterwards she hungered to do more - and did.  My kids are in 2nd and 6th grade and I am definitely going to have them read this.  It was a comfortable story to read and the message is very clear.  I give this book 4 stars and would love to read a 2nd season of Shelby with Mr. T.  I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rarely do you find a children's book that truly emphasizes the need to give back in a simple way for kid's to understand the meaning, until now! Tom T's Hat Rack from author Michele Spry was born out of the inspiration of watching her good friend, Tom Trabue, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in May of 2012. Watching how positive and upbeat he was during his treatment was incredible. She is also living her life paying it forwards towards others as often as she can and enjoys the feeling of making others happy. She took those two pieces and began writing "Tom T's Hat Rack." Michele's goal was to help the reader understand how important each of the characters are to the story. Shelby's parents and Mrs. T are active throughout the story, which was something she felt was also important. This is the perfect book to teach the value of paying it forward to others. In this story, Shelby Summers, a 4th grader at Eagle Ridge Elementary School who has grown up as an only child. Having no brothers or sisters, she spends her afternoons and summer with an elderly couple, Tom and Kim Tucker, a retired couple that lives only four houses away while her mom, Karen, a nurse for Sunnyvale Children's Hospital and her dad, John, is a doctor at Clarkson's Cancer Hospital are working. Shelby was as fond of Mr. and Mrs. T, as she loving refers to them throughout the story, as her grandparents. They have a long standard tradition of hanging out together as a family three nights a week, sharing dinner and the T's take care of Shelby while her parents are working. While her other friends looked forward to summer vacations spent with family and friends, Shelby looked forward to her time spending the summer with the T's. The rest of her family lived far away, but to Shelby, Mr. and Mrs. T, were her world. She had spent the last ten years coming to their house nearly every single day. Last summer, Mr. T was diagnosed with cancer and had undergone six months of chemotherapy. Shelby understood that Mr. T had good days and bad and was looking forward to spending lots of time with him this summer. Shelby's dad was Mr. T's doctor and they all worked together to ensure that Mr. T got the best possible care in dealing with his cancer. Mr. T wanted to do something special with Shelby this summer and had agreed to keep it a secret. He knew after all these tough issues with cancer, he wanted to do something positive to benefit others and with Shelby's caring spirit and her enjoyment for doing things for others, she would make the perfect partner. I won't ruin the surprise for you in what both Mr. T and Shelby are able to accomplish but it will be life changing not only for them but for those that benefit from their summer project. I received Tom T's Hat Rack by Michele Spry, compliments of Bostick Communications and Spry Publishing for my honest review and did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable one. This is such an important book to share with young children because the message in itself is powerful. It shows what compassion and servitude really look like when you're willing to extend yourself and really take the needs of others into consideration. I highly recommend this one and rate it a 5 out of 5 stars. Beautifully illustrated throughout, it challenges our kids to take own their own projects at the conclusion.

Paying It Forward! Shelby Summer is so excited school is about to let out for the summer.  When school starts up again she will be in the 5th grade and her teacher will be the same teacher she had for 4th grade.  At the end of each school year Shelby went around to all her teachers from kindergarten and up to tell them goodbye and how much she would miss them.   On the last day of school as the teacher is saying goodbye to her students she shocks them all by asking them to write an essay over the summer.  This was strange, who gives homework for summer vacation?  When the teacher explained she wanted them to write an essay about something they did over the summer that changed their life forever, the kids were somewhat relieved about the assignment. Some of the kids had plans to go somewhere on vacation and could write about that.  Now with Shelby she was planning on staying right in her neighborhood which was fine with her.  She was going to be staying with the two best people in the whole world, Mr. T and Mrs. T.  They have taken care of her ever since she was a baby so her parents could go to work.  She loved them like they were family almost like they were her grandparents.  When she got off the bus she couldn't wait to tell Mr. and Mrs. T about her day and the assignment the teacher gave them for homework over the summer.  Mr. T would think that was funny, he was her best friend, they did everything together and when he was sick she made him feel better.   Mr. and Mrs. T think that Shelby is a bright and friendly young girl and are always happy to see her.  Mr. T decided he wanted Shelby to help him with a special project over the summer.  They were going to build something and she would help.  She would also help him deliver whatever they have built, but he wants it to be a surprise to her as to what the  project is until it is finished.   I would be way too anxious to know what they going to build!  Will you be able to wait patiently for the project to be revealed?  You will have to wait just like I did!  Haaa!  Haa!  I will tell you it is well worth the wait.  I will give you some of hints. They have to buy 4 x 4s, nails, paint, sandpaper and wood glue.  It will be very useful item!   The author writes this story with her friend Tom Trabue in mind.  I found story to be slow at first, but it is to give you some insight into Shelby Summer's character and the people most important in her life.  I felt this to be necessary to understand the story.  As you are pulled into the project it becomes a real mystery as what the project is, as it gets closer and closer to being finished.  This teaches not only patience but when working with wood and building things you get the opportunity to hone your math skills.  This also calls for accuracy in the calculations.  The companionship in doing the project with someone else is a major plus.   Lessons learned were kindness, paying it forward and serving the community.  This book has definitely made an impression on me and I will do my best to put what I have learned to work in my life and my community. I highly recommend this book. I rated this book a 5 out of 5. Disclosure:  I received a free copy of this book from the Author, Michele Spry for review.  I was in no way compensated for this review.  This is review is my honest opinion.

My children loved this book and so did I! This easy to read, fast-paced chapter book kept my kids' interest until the very end! Since we read it, we have been brainstorming about our "Paying it Forward" project. We plan on writing about our projects inside the book's covers and I'll keep it as a cherished family keepsake.
