Tooth and Nail (Inspector John Rebus Series #3) by Ian Rankin

Scottish homicide detective John Rebus has been sent from "North of the Border" to help London police catch a serial killer with a gruesome M.O. Teamed with a London cop he wants to trust but can't, Rebus lets a beautiful psychologist into the case develops a bizarre portrait of a killer who leaves bite marks and tears on each victim's body. Now it's only a question of who is going to get busted first: the cop with the accent who breaks all the rules—or the psycho painting London with blood...

The New York Times calls Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus books "A superior series," and Tooth and Nail is another outstanding entry.

Barnes &Noble, I was interested in this book and looked at the reviews. There are 9 reviews listed, and only one is legit. The rest are stupid underage users playing their clan games- PLEASE do something to STOP these underage kids from doing this. It ruins their pose of reviews for everyone . If it keeps up, I will no longer shop at Barnes & Noble. I have seen numerous complaints about this and nothing has been done .

Rankin's dark and brooding signature noir. This book gets off to a somewhat slow start but it creeps up on you. It is like you are alone reading on the floor of a dark empty room with a single light, a room in which the walls are slowly closing in on you a fraction of an inch at a time. You feel relaxed and a little uninvolved in the beginning until you hit a point when you suddenly come to the realisation that the walls are closing in on you and there is no way out! The mood is dark and brooding and the pace is perfectly controlled - slowly mounting tension and suspense that grips you in an ever tightening vice. The ending is superbly dramatic (if a bit melodramatic). The only thing is I don't believe in serial killers so much. I believe killings are generally personal or, if serial, sexually motivated. It's only a tiny pet peeve of mine, but I think Rankin gets the psychology a little wrong there. Rebus is well developed and the supporting character of Inspector Flight is well defined. Character development is not as strong as in the Inspector Morse series and the writing is toned down and slightly less literary than that of Colin Dexter's. Loved Rebus in London.

Tooth and Nail: Fairly old book by Ian Rankin but with the main character, Rebus, you never know how, what and when he will think of other alternatives to bust the case open. If you love Scotish mystery novels, Ian Rankin's creations are a must. Ian last book, Exit Music features his main character, Rubus again, in his last case on the force. It is also a must read for Ian's fans.
