Overview

Arson detective Norm Strom is always one step behind a serial arsonist who is responsible for torching several buildings in the city. He tracks down known arsonist Johnny Eagle and turns him into his informant, hoping to use one torch to catch another.

Eagle tells all, revealing the pleasure and satisfaction that he gets from setting and watching a raging inferno. Detective Strom relies on Eagle and his other informants to help him discover the true identity of the serial arsonist. To keep the cops off his back, Johnny Eagle rats on his own friends. Is he playing with fire on both sides of the fence?

Detective Strom and Johnny Eagle each tell their own version of the story, putting the reader right in the middle of a dangerous game of cat and rat.

About the Author

Edmond Gagnon was a city police detective who retired and traveled the world, before writing his first book called, A Casual Traveler. It was well-received and Ed caught the writing bug so he started his Norm Strom Crime Fiction Series with a book about his career and informants called, Rat. He continued the series with Bloody Friday, Torch, Finding Hope and Border City Chronicles, all stories inspired by real events and characters he encountered throughout his policing career. Ed also wrote a crime anthology, All These Crooked Streets with two other local authors. His latest work, Four, is a paranormal thriller. "Finally, a realistic detective novel!

Although technically the third book in Edmond Gagnon’s Norm Strom crime series, this is the first for me. The story follows Detective Norm Strom as he deals with a series of arsons plaguing the city.

Like I said in the beginning, this book is unlike a lot of crime/detective fiction out there simply because it feels totally real. I’m sure that’s owed completely to the fact the author is a retired police officer. There are no super cops, no city demolishing action scenes, and no CSI units with tech that would feel more at home in a sci-fi novel. Nope, Torch is all about pounding the pavement, talking to the suspects and putting pieces together. Even when there are action scenes, they are played with a heavy dose of realism. Detective Strom doesn’t just come in guns blazing, he gathers evidence, gets warrants and permission from his superiors, talks to other detectives and firefighters and cross-references his case with other open ones in the department. Torch is very much a police procedural.

The writing is brisk, and the page count is fairly short, so I was able to burn through Torch at a blistering pace. I was worried that the end of the book was going to be some sort of predictable fare, but it wasn’t at all. I was genuinely surprised at how the story plays out."
