Description: This is the third edition of a comprehensive textbook of burn care. The second edition was published in 2002.
Purpose: A multidisciplinary review of burn management is provided for those in a variety of medical disciplines including allied health professionals.
Audience: Trainees, medical professionals, and others with an interest in the management of burn injury are an appropriate audience for this work, which comes from the major burn centers in the United States and Canada.
Features: The format used in the previous editions is reproduced here. An overview on burn presentation and epidemiology begins the book, followed by specifics of wound management, infectious complications, and respiratory changes. Later chapters review metabolic complications in support of the burn patient as well as specific critical care considerations. Concluding chapters focus on reconstruction, psychiatric disorders associated with burn injury, and rehabilitation management. Chapters are clearly written with texture of type and color highlights dividing major topics. A superb set of color illustrations describes injuries of various types and treatment techniques. References from earlier editions, which represent original work, are frequently retained with selected additional citations dating to within one year of publication. The quality of tables and illustrations is excellent. The table of contents lists chapter titles and authorship without dividing content into broader categories. The detailed subject index includes separate citations for figures, photographs or tables.
Assessment: This remains the leading comprehensive reference for management of burn injury and it effectively addresses the evolution in burn management strategies. The addition of a large number of high quality color photographs is an excellent advance over the previous edition. A complementary atlas, edited by Barret and Herndon, provides additional illustrations (Color Atlas of Burn Care (Saunders, 2001)).
