Overview

Total Surrender by Cheryl Holt

With the last of her family possessions gambled away by her dissolute brother, Lady Sarah Compton has traveled to a country house gala for one last moment of grace and beauty. But she is unaware that the occasion is actually a notorious trysting event, where members of the aristocracy can indulge in their every sensual fantasy and erotic whim. Nor does she realize that the striking man who has stolen into her bedroom is none other than Michael Stevens--a rake who gives and takes his pleasures boldly...

The bastard son of an earl, Michael Stevens relishes his reputation as London's most notorious seducer. But he has no idea what to make of the auburn-haired beauty he's nearly mistaken for new conquest or how such an innocent could possibly have been invited to a gather where London's bored elite caters to each other's carnal desires. When the lady refuses to heed Michael's warning--to leave the house for her own protection--a powerful attraction grows, and soon, he longs to tutor the very proper Lady Sarah Compton in the art of passion...

Having just completed this book and have read several others ..... This was very enjoyable. If not for anything else, her writing style will improve your vocabulary. It is really worht the time and effort to see this story unfold.

I would recommend reading the first book by Cheryl Holt called Love Lessons before reading this one. I, however, did not. I was disappointed because I learned of this once I realized what happened to James and Abigail from the first book. I feel that this would have been a better read if I would have read James and Abigail¿s story first. I found that this book reflected back to the first a great deal. I also felt that Michael¿s story was very similar to James¿. Like other reviewers I felt Love Lessons and Total Surrender was a cut and paste by the author. Although the sexual scenes were tantalizing and very graphic in nature, I felt that the author had a hard time pulling a good plot along with those scenes until the very end. Basically, the first seven or eight chapters were great and then the last ten or so. She could have cut out some of the chapters in the middle. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this book because of the heroine, Sara. She seemed to know exactly what she wanted and how to get it. Michael was purely her teacher of erotic lessons. Overall, if you want a good erotic read then this one will fit your needs.

I thought the writing in this book was dreadful. Someone must have told the author that you musn't use a noun unless it has an adjective in front of it and you must write with an unabridged dictionary at hand and use as many esoteric words as possible, as well as complete nonsense sentences when. It's not that I didn't understand the words; the writing just detracted from the story line. Some other reviewers said there is a good story underneath all this, but I couldn't make myself look for it. For great, simple writing that draws you in, look to Diana Gabaldon (Outlander Series); for great erotica, look to Robin Schone or early Susan Johnston.

If you like erotica, this is a must read. I could not put it down. I made sure that I read the next book about brother, James. I will contiue to read Cheryl Holt's books.

In 1812 England, though the daughter of an Earl, Lady Sarah Compton knows her family is ruined due to the bad judgment of her kind but now deceased father and the absolute idiocy of her brother Hugh believing that gambling away everything is his divine right. Needing cash to support his decadent lifestyle, Hugh demands Sarah snare a wealthy husband, but she thinks little of the idea especially when she reflects on her one disastrous season. However, Sarah does attend Lady Carrington¿s house party in Bedford not so much because of Hugh¿s orders, but as her last chance for fun before poverty becomes her life.

However, this is no rustic tea party as the aristocracy has come here for sexual games. Among the participants is Michael Stevens, the most notorious rake in the land. Her innocence unnerves him, especially when she insists he teaches her the art of pleasure. As they fall in love, an unknown enemy will do anything to insure that Michael fails to find the proof that he seeks.

This is an exciting erotic Regency romance starring two intriguing characters who in spite of the explicit scenes are typical of the sub-genre, i.e., the rake and the virgin. Still the story line grips the audience from the start until the final nude setting, as the lead characters are a dynamic couple battling for TOTAL SURRENDER. The suspense element adds tension, but the tale belongs to Sarah and Michael. Cheryl Holt turns up the heat with this enticing historical romance.

I just think this author would be better suited in writing maybe mystery novels instead of romance. She just isn't cut out for this line of writing. Normally the first 2 to 4 pages keeps you reading but not this one you can barely get past page 2.

This was not at all what I expected for a romance novel. It was more explicit & the language was shocking. I'm not a prude, but it's not what I look for in a romance novel. I had to look at the cover & make sure it wasn't written by Jackie Collins. I, also, felt the characters did not have the same level of sexual tension as it other books by different authors.

Having just finished Holt's Love Lessons, I wondered if I was actually reading a different book when I picked up Total Surrender. A slight change in the story lines, but other than that, it appeared cut and pasted from the previous book. Certainly no point in buying both.
