The instant New York Times bestseller | Named one of the ten best books of 2019 by People magazine

A chance encounter at a summer party on Martha’s Vineyard blossomed into an improbable but enduring friendship.

Carly Simon and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis made an unlikely pair—Carly, a free and artistic spirit still reeling from her recent divorce, searching for meaning, new love, and an anchor; and Jackie, one of the most celebrated, meticulous, unknowable women in American history.

Nonetheless, over the next decade their lives merged in inextricable and complex ways, and they forged a connection deeper than either could ever have foreseen. The time they spent together—lingering lunches and creative collaborations, nights out on the town and movie dates—brought a welcome lightness and comfort to their days, but their conversations often veered into more profound territory as they helped each other navigate the shifting waters of life lived, publicly, in the wake of great love and great loss.

An intimate, vulnerable, and insightful portrait of the bond that grew between two iconic and starkly different American women, Carly Simon’s Touched by the Sun is a chronicle, in loving detail, of the late friendship she and Jackie shared. It is a meditation on the ways someone can unexpectedly enter our lives and change its course, as well as a celebration of kinship in all its many forms.

"In Touched by the Sun, Simon reveals an easy-going, playful side of [Jackie] that most people never saw — sneaking a smoke during intermission at the opera, frolicking in the ocean off the Vineyard . . . The woman who would later edit several of Simon’s children’s books was 'just fun to be around.'" —Juliet Pennington, The Boston Globe

This is a book about Carly Simon. Very, very little content about Jackie. Very short book... 166 pages, many filled with song lyrics. Not much content.

My favorite singer has done it again as an author! Touched By The Sun is another gem written by Carly Simon. Ms. Simon lets us into her private world with Jackie Onassis. Sensitive, fun, witty,'s all there. Though she may not seem to realize it, Carly Simon (to me) is "one who is touched by the sun." Get a copy or several as I have done to give to my sisters and friends. :o)

Carly Simon's second memoir is an emotional, loving and respectful tribute to her friend Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Carly takes the reader on a poignant, intimate journey of life and love and how a friendship can actually lead you to more knowledge about yourself. Ms Simon's writing is exquisite. Many times I put the book down to simply sit with the beauty of what I had just read. If you're looking for a heart-opening, beautifully written book about life and love, this is the one.

I found this respectful, insightful, and well written in a unique style, not unexpected given the artistry of the author. There’s insights into both of their lives that can’t be found in the usual Wikipedia search. But a tabloid tryst this is definitely not. Undoubtedly there will be some people who just with the mention of JKO will be incensed that anyone (author) Should “… take such liberties…”.But honestly, given the particular publisher, I guess there’s no way they would’ve published it if that was at all the intent. This is simply a sincere, sensitive and emotional story about two people Who at first glance couldn’t be more opposite (icons though they are) but who developed a deep friendship that lasted over a decade.

More of a platform for Carly Simon to drop names of the rich & famous she socialized with on Martha's Vineyard. The disappointing.

I love Carly's style in which she writes about her life. This book shares some interesting moments she experienced with Jackie but isn't a "tell all' by any means. It's really more insightful as to her relationships with her friends and family and love the way she descries things in such detail yet in such a unique, creative way. Such a great story teller.

Terrible book. Carly writes more about herself. I think she was an acquaintance of Jackie. She wasted many pages about her relation with Diane Sawyer. Book should be retitled “My Life as Carly Simon”. Wish I had my money back!

Carly has done it again. She has demonstrated her remarkable writing talents in this terrific book. Her obvious affection and respect for Jackie shines through in every word and story about her friend. It is a pleasure to be privy to the wonderful relationship these two women had. It was a total pleasure to read this book. The reader is given a better understanding of the complicated and amazing woman Jackie was and of the support and comfort they gave one another. Do yourself a great big favor and run out and get this book!!!

I loved this book and finished it in two evenings! I have been a fan of Carly Simon's music for over forty years and I really enjoyed her last book, the memoir "Boys In The Trees". When I heard her next book was going to discuss her friendship with Jackie, I wished some that it instead would have been 'part two' of her memoir (1983 and later). This book does discuss much of what was going on in Carly's life during the late eighties and nineties...her Oscar win, her second marriage, and other personal things I had not been aware of. The Jackie stories were icing on the cake for me. I think Jackie would be flattered by the book. It's a loving portrait. No dirt here. There are interesting insights into Jackie's thoughts, tastes, and feelings about men. It's written in Carly's typical sometimes wry and always intelligent style and well-worth your time.

I knew when I started Carly Simon's Touched By the Sun, I would read a respectful account of her friendship and love for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. It would not be salacious. It would be kind. It would be loving. It would be truthful. There were several times while reading her accounts of Jackie, family and friends, that I found myself teary-eyed and very moved. Carly Simon is a gifted artist with an artist's anxious soul matched with her sweet temperment. Like Carly, her book flows both in truth, description, and creative literary references. She wonders, like Jackie, if she is also touched by the sun - a beautiful and compelling song that she composed for her dear friend. The answer is, of course, a profound YES!!
