Overview

The only in-depth biographical account of the legendary lead singer of Joy Division, written by his widow. Includes a foreword by Jon Savage and an introduction by Joy Division drummer, Steven Morris.

Revered by his peers and idolized by his fans, Ian Curtis left behind a legacy rich in artistic genius. Mesmerizing on stage but introverted and prone to desperate mood swings in his private life, Curtis died by his own hand on 18 May 1980.

Touching from a Distance documents how, with a wife, child and impending international fame, Curtis was seduced by the glory of an early grave. Regarded as the essential book on the essential icon of the post-punk era, Touching from a Distance includes a full set of Curtis's lyrics and a discography and gig list.

Joy Division was one of the powerful bands of the late 70's and early 80's. Up until the point of Ian's death, they were making music of a completely ethereal nature. Deborah Curtis recounts the days of Ian from the time he was a boy up to the end of his life. This book gives the perspective of the person who lived with him, who saw everything. A must for any Joy Division fan.

A must read if you are a Joy Division fan. Amazing perspective into Ian and Deborah’s life. Deborah is a strong woman who went through a lot with Ian. Very well written and engaging. Love it!

If you like books about music, suicide, isolation, and the struggle to die in peace; then this is the read for you! Be sure to listen to Closer (their last full album) over and over again so you could capture his mood and perspective, and match it with his widow's account. You will not want to put this down, and you WILL BE disturbed. I wanted to cry often, so its a good summer/beach book!

BTW it's Ian Curtis and Joy Division. I'm not sure who Tom Curtis is, since it is written bu Deborah Curtis, his widow. And Jay Division? That is just irresponsible data entry.

Ever see 'Girl, Interrupted'? Remember the scene when Suezanna finds the girl hanging? The message: death is not romantic. The words of Ian Curtis meant more to me as a youth than any other writer had until then. The book, for me, is a spiritual message that shows the destructive effects of suicide to everyone touched by the victim. I understand it all more than anyone should, and can only imagine the incredible grief that those that actually knew Curtis must still have to deal with. The book expresses that grief, making his death less remote. It is not a depressing book in a clinical sense, but certainly sobering and heart wrenching. Now when is it time to laugh?

Ian Curtis' dream had come true. Music was his passion, his life was lived to put out an album and a single. His band, Joy Division, put out two of each. His dreams fulfilled, he followed through with another goal: An early grave. This title delves into the life of Ian Curtis through the eyes of his Wife Deborah. A liturary journey through Ian's entire life. It is an excellent book. Kind of a Difficult read, but still rather captivating. If you enjoy Joy Division, Music, or real life tragedy you will like this.
