Toxic by Nicole Blanchard

"John Doe" was just another patient. A criminal.

As a prison nurse, I knew the rules: do my job, don't get involved, and never let a prisoner get under my skin.

I broke all three.

My passion, my obsession, my addiction. I risked my entire life so we could be together.

I thought helping him escape from prison would be the hard part.

It turns out when you fall in love with a villain, you also turn into one.

First things first, I'm not a big fan of dark romance, not because I don't like them, but because I've never stumbled upon one that grabbed my attention long enough. But recently, that has changed because of two authors, one of them being Nicole Blanchard. Starting with the blurb I was intrigued enough that I felt the need to read, and as I started to read I couldn't put it down. Toxic is certainly one of the best books I've read this year and opened me up to the possibility of reading more of this genre. The triggers are there and they are very strong. Violence, physical and mental abuse is a big part of this story, but also the transformation of both Tessa and Gracin makes this story different and just brilliant. I've read other books by this author and she just proved that she can adapt herself and her words to any kind of scenario and deliver a great story. Tessa's life has been a struggle ever since she was born. She thought life finally was giving her a break when she met Vic, but the man who was supposed to love and protect her did the complete opposite. So it's expected that she thought she was loosing it when she felt the newest inmate was her savior.

The only word for this book is INTENSE! Tessa is a nurse in a prison and her abusive husband is the warden. She lives her life on the edge, never knowing when her husband will strike next. She can only dream of getting away from him. Then she meets the prisoner they call "King" and her life gets turned upside down. Gracin Kingsley "King" makes her want things she shouldn't and eventually he blackmails her into helping him escape. Tessa then realizes that this is her chance to get away from her husband, her life and especially the dangerous King. Then the hunt begins! This is one of those books you know you shouldn't like because it is so dark, but you just can't help yourself because the characters draw you in right from the start and you never know what will happen next. I read this book in one sitting ... I could not put it down. I graciously received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.

If I could give this 10 stars, I would. While I love Nicole's writing, this one was so much more than I expected. It is stated as being a "dark" read, and it is in a lot of ways. But many of the ways that it is isn't what you may be thinking in the traditional sense. (ie: bad man and good girl/woman) When we meet John Doe (AKA Gracin), he's kind of an enigma. We know right off that he is not a good man, but the enormity of who he is unfolds beautifully throughout the story. It's a bit shocking and frightening at times. Tessa is a fighter but in a terrible situation. I don't think that she "turns bad". It's more like she's done being a victim, is taking her life back, and actually places value on herself. In doing this she discovers her true self. I think that Gracin saw it in her well before she ever exerted herself. It seems that Gracin is using her in many ways, but she goes along with most of it. It's not done in a feeble female type of way - think coercion. The "dark" parts can cause triggers for some, but the events and actions as this book unfolds will keep you captivated and spellbound. This one had me never being able to guess what was coming next and refusing to put the book down. It's a little different in both characters and story but well worth the read. I highly recommend this one! I received an Advanced Reader copy of this book and I'm choosing to leave a review.

This book has all the triggers, but I could not put it down. I'm not usually a fan of dark romance, but I was hooked on this book from chapter one. Tessa finds herself moving from one toxic relationship to another. Her husband who appears to be an upstanding man as the warden of the jail she also works at, but is not. She meets Gracin, an inmate who shows her some attention, shows her she is worth more than the way her husband treats her. The twists and turns in this story had me on the edge of my seat wondering exactly what was going to happen next.

I just finished reading this story by Nicole Blanchard and my emotions are still in upheaval. While reading this story your feelings are going to run the full gamut because it is filled with so many taboos that can be present in relationships today. There were times in this story where I wondered what would make Tessa do the things she was doing, but understood that her life for the most part hadn't been ideal. That would not only cause her to make rash decisions, but be drawn to someone who could manipulate her as well even if she was needed and loved. Gracin needed help to follow through with his plan and Tessa was going to be the person to help him. He wasn't a nice guy and she didn't fit his lifestyle, but he was drawn to her and felt protective of her all the while she could help him succeed with his plan and move on. Their love may not be healthy, but it is still their love and they were going to do everything they could to make sure that no one could possibly interfere ever again. I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Tessa was a nurse in the prison her husband was warden of and he had eyes everywhere. He used any excuse to abuse her and she stayed. Little Mouse - That's what he called her. She didn't know his name but she was drawn to him. He was forbidden, every beating was worth it, and now she is breaking all the rules. She couldn't help herself and he wouldn't let up. Then he uses her. Was it just a farce? This fast paced action packed read is not what we are used to from this author. . . it's so much darker. He isn't a nice man and she is no longer a mouse. He has released the mouse from the trap but what has she become. This is not your normal hea and definitely not what this author normally does but this standalone is most definitely worth the read. Once you finish it you can figure out who is really Toxic between these two. The passion, the emotions, the loss, the fire, the freedom, which of these define this book? All of them. It's hot, intriguing, action, passionate, vengeful and most of all freeing. Be advised it isn't pretty, there are no unicorns and rainbows, it is ugly, gritty, addicting and you won't be able to put it down because it will call to that hidden darkness in you and won't be denied. Please be aware this isn't a gentle read, there is abuse and torture and it's detailed so be advised if this is your trigger. This author pulls out all the stops on this one. She will stretch you in ways you have never been stretched by her. She will pull you into their darkness and feed it to you piece by piece and you will beg for more.

This book had me on the edge of my seat from the very start. It was raw, gritty, sensual and suspenseful. Ms Blanchard expertly weaved a dark, seductive tale about very flawed and damaged characters making us feel heartbreak, horror, confusion, and yet compassion, empathy, and so much more. The journey that Tessa endures is horrifying yet it makes her stronger than anyone would believe from her mousy actions at the beginning. She is smart, resilient and courageous. After being played by a man for the second time, Tessa is determined to start a new life. But after unwittingly helping sexy bad boy Gracin escape from prison, he is not willing to let her go so easily. When someone else is out to hurt her, she is in for the fight of her life! This dark, forbidden romance is gritty, shocking, and seductive. I didn't want to read it at some points but I was powerless to put it down. I kept trying to figure out where this story was going, and the twists this story would take kept me totally engaged. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of dark, edgy stories that takes you on a twisty, thrilling journey you won't forget!

Toxic is a white hot masterpiece that will rock, shatter, and rebuild every part of your heart. Nothing in this brilliant storyline will allow you to stand still and gather dust. From the first word you are immediately placed on runaway train that is desperate to jump the rails and find its own track and destination. No matter what you occupy the seat of honor throughout every part of this magnificent journey. What a heavenly dream come true of a story! When one bad decision leads to another, can good possibly be found in its messy aftermath? When your life is ripped apart by darkness can you ever regain any semblance of sanity or peace? Our beautiful and incredible heroine Tessa has to face this nightmare and then some as her life is torn apart so many times, she isn’t sure there is anything left that she can even attempt to put back together. My heart was devastated to watch what all this unbelievably incredible character endures. Not many people could hold onto their sanity or their hope after everything that she is put through over a few short years. Even our hero is nothing that we could have ever seen coming. He is larger them life and everything we both love and hate. Beyond anything else he is the only man who has ever offered a hand to Tessa with no strings or dark intentions attached. Nicole Blanchard has proven without a doubt that she is a spectacularly epic author who is an unbelievable force to be reckoned with! She has truly stepped up her game and blessed us with a fabulous book that will forever live within my heart. If you have never heard of this author until now, you will never forget her name after savoring each life-changing emotion within these brilliant pages!

I’ve been dying to read this book ever since the author teased us with Tessa and this mysterious man. This mysterious, dark, and deadly man. I was not disappointed at all. Gracin “King” Kingley was definitely all that and more. He was also Tessa’s savior. Tessa was bruised and battered, but she was strong and determined. She may not have realized that until Gracin brought it to the surface but her strength was there all along just waiting to come out and fight. I had a love hate relationship with Gracin. I loved him because he brought out Tessa’s strengths and ultimately saved her. But I hated him because of the pain she had to endure because of him. He hid his love for her well, but I know he had to do that in order to make sure she was constantly safe. Tessa’s emotional state broke my heart in half over and over again. No one should have to endure as much pain and distress as she did throughout her entire life. These two were one and the same, suffering from the same pain and living to survive it. They were perfect for each other in their own crazy way. Definitely a Toxic relationship I didn’t mind reading about. I voluntarily read an advanced copy for an honest review.

Different than any other story I've read! This is one of those books that you love but you feel like you shouldn't because it's kinda dark and that would be wrong but go ahead and love it though because it'll take you on a great ride! Gracin is definitely drool worthy and you're gonna want to hate him as well but you won't! Fist pump in the air to Tessa...I won't tell you why but you'll understand soon! I hope we'll get more of this story because I want to know where these two end up next!

Wow! I don't even know where to start with this one. I can't say that I particularly liked either of the main characters, individually, but together, Gracin and Tessa are riveting. The story is beautifully written, and for a tale with such controversial characters, it is oddly compelling. It is a rare occasion when I find myself actually rooting for the bad guys, and make no mistake, Gracin is most definitely a bad guy, but the connection he and Tessa have is undeniable. It's easy to see how Tessa fell for Gracin's charms, considering the hand she's been dealt, and he brings out her dark side magnificently. Toxic is dark, a bit twisted, fan yourself sexy, heart wrenching, violent, and in the end, even hopeful. Tessa's journey from mouse to lion is quite gripping and one that I couldn't put down.
