Being an owner of more than a dozen other Munchkin sets, it seemed that there hadn't been enough to drive me towards Munchkin Apocalypse. Furthermore, I'm still not entirely sold on the need for these "Guest Artist Edition"s. Granted, Len Peralta did do one of the first non-John Kovalic boosters (based on The Guild), so argument is there that he was already tied to the series (much like Katie Cook and Greg Hyland were, and how Ian McGinty has since become). Still, I didn't run out to purchase those sets, so how would this one appeal to me? Enter the circular game board. The moment I saw it I knew it was going to bug me until I had it. For a game series that previously only had boards with two card piles and a horizontally laid out level-counter, this one gave the impression that so much could, and would happen during a game. The game-play follows traditional Munchkin rules, first to ten wins. You gain levels through fighting monsters and playing the right cards and keeping your friends down. Apocalypse Introduces the Seal mechanic, whereas apocalyptic events and situation occur, affecting the players throughout the game, and will actually end the game if seven of the seals are open at one time. In a sense, it is similar to the dungeon mechanic in other munchkin expansions, but usually effecting the players more. Game-play is listed as being an hour, typically mine are an hour and a half. Need three players, I find four works best, and those who have a good gamer's temperament. Len Peralta's artwork is really well done here, his take on the series is both original and reminiscent of Kovalic's take on the series. The cards keep the same background as the original, so you could be like me and add Kovalic's Munchkin Apocalypse 2: Sheep Impact without revealing what set your cards are from (Peralta also has a version of the sequel, so far being the only GAE with one). All in all, not recommended as your first Munchkin game, but highly recommended for any Munchkin collection
