About the Author

The author joined the Pakistan Navy in 1965. He was commissioned in the engineering branch of the Navy in 1969 and retired in 1993 after serving in various ships, submarines, and shore establishments. He joined a large private company in 1993 as managing director, manufacturing engine crankshafts with Spanish collaboration. In 1996, he established a medium-scale safety matches manufacturing concern. In 2000, after hearing and then looking at the untold heart-rending human suffering in Afghanistan because of the sanctions imposed by the United Nations on US bidding, he joined an NGO to bring about an economic and technical union between Pakistan and Afghanistan by marrying the technical knowhow of the former with the natural resources of the latter. This undertaking was mainly for humanitarian reasons and in the national interest of both the countries. The NGO was later allegedly demonized as a terrorist organization, and the author had to face and endure unexpected consequences afterwards. The book narrates briefly the events which occurred from May 2000 to March 2002 as a result of that fateful decision of his to cross over the border to Afghanistan.
