Overview

Noted for affectionate loyalty to their masters and their household, typical Boxers respond most readily to positive reinforcement techniques, such as clicker training. Inappropriate obedience training methods can often produce a stubborn and unwilling learner. This book, a title in Barron's Training Your Dog series, presents breed-specific advice to dog owners. The emphasis is on dog-friendly methods for teaching skills and preventing or correcting bad habits. Virtually every aspect of canine training is covered, including house training, teaching obedience to verbal cues and hand signals, retrieving, walking the dog on a leash, and more. Instructive color photos appear on most pages.

'Training Your Boxer' is a training guide using positive reinforcement techniques that are tailored specifically for the Boxer. The book includes insights into why your Boxer behaves the way he or she does, and explains the best way to channel these qualities when training your puppy or dog. Training chapters include: House-training, Socialization, Habituation, Beginning Command Training, Five Basic Commands (the essential commands for a well-behaved Boxer), Nine More Commands (some commands that come in handy), Five Boxer Tricks, Aggression (what forms it takes and how to prevent and/or work with it), Looking for Trouble (dealing with some common behavior 'problems'), Non-competitive Activities and Competitive Activities (what it takes to get involved, and some of the basic skills you will need to participate or compete). Full-color photographs detail how each command is taught. The foreword to the book was written by two of the world's most recognized and respected Boxer trainers--who were both integral in contributing tips and training techniques, as well as reviewing the manuscript: Tracy Hendrickson of Sunchase Boxers (and owner/trainer of the ABC Performance Dog of the Year/2000), and Norbert Zawatzki, director of training for the Boxer Klub e.v. Sitz Munchen.
