Midwestern rockers Transmatic carry a post-grunge torch similar to the likes of Oleander and Our Lady Peace, illustrating a rollicking edge and energetic disposition with emotional lyrics. Their self-titled debut, which was produced by Neil Avron (SR-71, Everclear), is sharp, with catchy pop tracks like "Blind Spot" and "The Problem," and frontman Joey Fingers' gritty vocals are inviting. He's a storyteller and isn't afraid to be a bit cynical at times, but mostly he's a passionate singer/songwriter venting his daily frustrations. Transmatic starts off rough-edged, but it also floats around light rock ballads similar to the likes of the Goo Goo Dolls and Fuel. It's not sappy nor overly playful, but Transmatic wear their hearts on their sleeves in reflection of conflicting independence ("Face to Face") and accepting life changes ("Impossible"). Transmatic is a solid debut effort -- nothing over the top. Hopefully Transmatic won't be lost in the shuffle of radio-friendly adult alternative rock.
