Editorial Reviews

Gretchen Garner
This lovely volume is not a guidebook to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on the Minnesota-Canada border but a meditation in words and photographs upon the experience of being there. Gruchow takes us gently, and with several sidetrips, through a day of solitary canoe travel. Writing in the manner of Thoreau and Sigurd Olson, Gruchow is slow-going and a bit homilistic at first but gathers strength in a section observing the metamorphosis of a dragonfly; eventually, we are rapt in his experience and peace of mind. Brimacombe's beautiful color photographs, like the text, don't portray specific sites as much as moods and textures. Misty lakes, smoothly cascading streams, sunny paths in the woods, many views of the water meeting the shore, and colorful sunsets colorfully reflected--such images are beautifully interwoven with the text as a kind of separate-but-equal experience rather than illustration. For the reader who wants more about the Boundary Waters after enjoying the book, a bibliography and listing of outfitters is appended.
