Treasure Island Book Review By Madison King Treasure Island By Robert Lewis Stevenson Treasure Island by Robert Lewis Stevenson is a classic tale of adventure that will keep young readers at the edge of their seat. Ever since Captain Billy Bones walked into the Admiral Benbow Inn, owned by the Hawkins family, young Jim Hawkins was instantly involved in a world of mystery, suspense, and adventure, Captain Billy Bones, an old sea dog, had come to possess an old buried treasure map once belonging to the most feared and famous pirate in the world, captain Flint. Young Jim Hawkins comes to stumble upon a detailed map of Treasure Island and decides to get help from his partners and put together a crew to find the hidden treasure. Unknown to Jim, most of his crew were pirates who were seeking to find the same hidden treasure. One of the crew members was the one-legged Long John Silver, who would become the leader of the secret group of rebelling pirates. This wonderful book is mostly narrated in the first person of young Jim Hawkins. The book is filled with descriptive adjectives and is written in a conversational style. The reader will be concerned for the life and safety of young Jim Hawkins because of the unsuspected mutinous pirates who Hawkins believed are loyal crewmembers . This book has many cliffhanger scenes which entice the reader to read on. One such scene is the great bloody battle, which takes place not only on the ship, but on Treasure Island as well. At times the young reader may find Stevenson's style of writing difficult to understand. This is because the author's writing and dialogue are set in a long ago period in England in the early 19th century. Many words and phrases will be unknown to the reader which will slow down even the most focused person .The book is also extremely heavy on dialogue and this too will make scenes hard to understand. Although the author has a very descriptive writing style, the reader will enjoy several unforgettable characters such as Long John Silver, Ben Gunn, and Jim Hawkins who are so exciting they seem to come to life right out of the pages. Treasure Island takes you from old Bristol England to the attempted mutiny on the ship, the Hispaniola, to the violent struggles on Treasure Island itself. Young Jim will meet the shipwrecked Ben Gunn, a man who has lost his mind as a result of living on the island for a very long time. In search of the treasure on the island, the book's characters find themselves willing to say and do anything to find the treasure, including lieing , cheating, stealing, and even killing. In the end, a surprise twist comes about when it is discovered that the treasure is not where it should be. However young Jim and his partners do eventually succeed in finding the dead Captain Flint's treasure, thanks to the help of the mad, marooned sailor Ben Gunn. Our hero Jim Hawkins somehow manages to survive all of his adventures and misadventures and successfully returns to Bristol, England. Treasure Island is a thrilling novel filled with unforgettable, interesting characters who take us with them on their adventures. I strongly recommend this book to young readers because of its many unexpected twists and turns, as well as its many entertaining characters. If you enjoyed Stevenson's Treasure Island, then you will like such books as C
