“...for who among us is not the hero of [their] own story?... Ixkaab Balam, exiled first daughter from the land where chocolate grows. Micah, a farmer’s child who dreams of a numbered life. Rafe Fenton, son of a trader who scoffs at his choice to get an education. Tess, a red headed woman who catches many eyes, but whose heart belongs to one. They all want happiness. And it seems that they all live in a box overseen?...owned? by The Duke and Duchess Tremontaine- William and Diane, who, along with others of their “set” live in their own world. And when lives intersect, lives change, for better...or for worse. This prequel to Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint, is set earlier in it’s realm, and written as a serial novel with 13 “episodes” written by compatriots of Kushner’s who respect her work and the world she has created. This type of serial isn’t new; Charles Dickens utilized the idea in many of his books and even Louisa May Alcott has her heroine help the family by writing “rubbish” weekly to pay the bills. However, to the New Adults/Young Adults this is aimed at, this is a fairly new type of presentation. The authors who wrote the stories, especially Joel Derfiner on whose addition the whole book pivots, are to be congratulated for pulling a City out of thin air! I look forward to more seasons of this wonderful world. Recommended. 4/5
