Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
From the "Rookie Read-About Dinosaurs" series, read about some of the characteristics and features of Triceratops. There is brief information about its distinctive three horns and how the triceratops may have used its horns. Readers will find short chapters with titles in bold green print. Each layout has a color picture and two sentences describing Triceratops. Most of the pictures support the text. For instance, the text about the teeth has a picture with an arrow to direct attention to the back teeth. On the other hand, the text about the horn on the nose could use a more defined illustration to support the description because the picture shows multiple horns on the face of the triceratops. There are two charts to compare the size and weight of Triceratops. Children may need guidance in using the informational text features such as the table of contents, index, and content vocabulary. Check out the other books in the series which feature other dinosaurs. The publisher web site has links to sites with additional information about dinosaurs; a second web site to a museum is listed on a separate page. This series on a high interest topic introduces students to dinosaur facts and some informational text features. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
