American scholar Rachel Farraday accepts a position researching a decaying chateau in France during the height of the French/Algerian war. Mysteries envelope the property, including a honeycomb of underground tunnels her employer is reluctant to discuss. A sudden death makes Rachel a surprise co-inheritor of the chateau with an attractive, possibly insane young man. Intrigue follows and now Rachel's life is threatened. "Trompe l'Oeil" is another exquisitely crafted tale of suspense: a lovely setting, harrowing situations, paranormal overtones and every ending a sinister surprise.

Caroline Miller’s Trompe l’Oeil: To Fool the Eye is an artful creation of Gothic suspense. You are ensnared on the first page, compelled to walk the chateau's dark hallways beside heroine Rachel Farraday until you both discover the story’s surprising end. In Trompe l’Oeil Miller’s elegant prose once again displays a deft mastery of every gothic element. Atmosphere, suspense, mystery, fear, and the supernatural combine perfectly to create a world of unrelenting unease. Be prepared to get lost in it.
