This collection of stories gives an intimate glimpse of the daily lives of African Americans living in the South during civil rights. At some level, I don't think even the most well-intentioned white people will ever remotely get what the African-American community's world during civil rights was like every day--even in relation to today, I'm pretty sure there are things we will never get. But walking in the shoes of these characters through the intimate moments of choice and happenstance is the closest thing I have ever had, even having read a lot of African American literature over the years. These small opalescent visions of days in the lives of your characters have given me a new appreciation for the ways in which the tiniest moments can be full of strain, confusion, promise, and meaning.
