All Lady Renna, a veteran of the Half-Elven Rebellion, wants is respect. But she’s caught between two millstones – her neighbor who covets her lands and her steward who still treats her like a child. People can’t see beyond her small stature and crippled gait. Considered a weakling, Renna lets people think what they want. She’s a weaver, not a fighter.

Renna may be sick of bloodshed, but as the holder of Ren Creek, she is expected to protect her people. When Lord Gorsfeld, her neighbor, starts vandalizing her holding, only she can protect her people. Her friend, Mariah, decides Renna has stayed on the sidelines too long. She pulls Renna into the power struggle with Gorsfeld for control of the Marches.

Reviewed by Bil Howard for Readers' Favorite Though the victory obtained in the Rebellion has set up a code to protect the lands of Lady Renna, holder of Ren Creek, her neighbor desires to get his hands upon it in order to consolidate his own interests in Troublesome Neighbors by M. K. Theodoratus. Having lost her father after the Rebellion, Renna is the sole holder and in charge of Ren Creek, a strategic part of the great southern river, which Lord Gorsfeld will have through becoming her ring-mate or through any other means possible. Renna, however, would be content to weave her blankets in peace with her pet pig, Black Tail, grunting happily at her side. Her performance as a ranger in the Rebellion, however, draws the attention of Mariah, her leader in the Rebellion, who needs her to help stop the growing desire of Gorsfeld to take complete control of the Marches. Will Renna be able to continue to live peacefully and enjoy the simple, quiet life of a weaver or will she be drawn into a conflict with her neighbors? M. K. Theodoratus has woven together an intriguing tale, in Troublesome Neighbors. It is a short, packed novella which grabs the reader’s interest and holds it fast. With so much of it left unexplained, yet giving a tantalizing taste, it is impossible to not want to find out what else is going on in the Marches, where Renna, Mariah and all of the other colorful characters came from and where they are headed. A teaser, with plenty of color to spark one’s interest, Troublesome Neighbors is an excellent start to a series which ought to keep true fantasy readers happily occupied for a while.

For me personally, I feel that Troublesome Neighbors holds all of the characteristics of what defines every good book in the fantasy genre, and also what separates it from the rest in an exceptional way. M.K. Theodoratus has taken the classic elements that make the fantasy genre so appealing to us readers and added her own unique and fresh twist that is a great testament to the quality of her writing. My only wish is that this book would be longer and to put it quite briefly, I need more!
