What NY Times Book Reviewer Geoffrey Ward says elsewhere on this page is true: there's not much original about the content of this book. But I'd recommend it for parents looking for something soothing to read to their smallest children. The book's stated age range is 5-8, but we started reading it to our son at about five months, and it was one of the only things that would make cranky moods go away. (And we read it so much that my husband and I committed it to memory and would recite it in the car to make rough car trips easier.) It's still one of his favorite books almost two years later. We've bought it in paperback and had repeated problems with the bindings coming loose -- we've gone through three copies -- so we are buying the hardcover version for the library binding we hope will last us through the next few years and next few children, as we expect our other children to be lulled by the rhythm of these lines and to be fascinated by the bright colors of the illustrations.
