True Love: A Practice for Awakening the Heart by Thich Nhat Hanh

In this little treasure, Thich Nhat Hanh offers a Buddhist view of love along with techniques for manifesting it in our daily lives. In his characteristically direct, simple, and compassionate style, he explores the four key aspects of love as described in the Buddhist tradition: loving kindness, compassion, joy, and freedom.

In order to love in a real way, Thich Nhat Hanh explains, we need to learn how to be fully present in our lives. In True Love he offers readers the technique of conscious breathing as a method for synchronizing the mind and body to establish the conditions of love. He goes on to offer a mantra practice for generating love that consists of expressing four key statements or intentions in our relationships. These include: "Dear one, I am really there for you"; "Dear one, I know that you are there, and I am really happy about it"; "Dear one, I know that you are suffering, and that is why I am here for you"; and "Dear one, I am suffering, please help me."

In the concluding section of the book, Thich Nhat Hanh explains how love can help us to heal our own pain, fear, and negativity. He explains that we must not regard negative emotions as bad and repress them. We must recognize them as part of us and allow them into our consciousness, where they can be cared for by the "loving mother of mindfulness."

A wonderfully motivating book. I happened to begin reading it shortly before Valentine's Day and it helped me change my thinking and attitude completely by the time the day arrived. The essence of the book is that to have love, we must first learn to give it. It is so simple, but not so easy when we let our egos get in our way. I plan to read it again before I put it on the shelf for future reference.

A brilliantly simple and easy book to read which skillfully brings a solution to how to be true to self and other in relationships. Thich Nhat Hanh teaches simply how to be present for yourself and how to offer time, full presence, mindfulness, freedom and joy to love. I find myself wishing I had found this as a child so I would could have gifted happiness and joy to others as well as to myself in my life. This is a must read for all those who are wanting truth, peace and a recipe for loving.

Short, simple and absolutely lovely. A should read for every person out there, ever. This book helped me adjust and refine my view on love and how to treat someone i love. I have read it multiple times and have given it as a present more than 10x since I first read it years ago. It caused reflection and an adjustment in attitude and perspective. It made me kinder to my other as well as all those around me. I walked away from it a better person and re-read it to keep myself on track with how I want to treat others as well as reminding myself how I need to be treated. I love this book. :)

Highly Recommended for those wondering what love really is or how it should be. I really enjoy reading his books as they are filled with wisdom that trandsend all religious groups. They also help you learn how to recover from suffering and give you something to recommend to family/friends who are experiencing suffering. His writings have also helped me understand Christianity even better and other Christian books like Jesus Calling by Sarah Young.
