Trust and Toleration / Edition 1

The problem that tolerance poses cannot be as easily solved as most contemporary thinkers seem to believe, says Dees (philosophy, U. of Rochester), because once people understand the point of view of the intolerant, they will cease to be convinced by the moral arguments for toleration. He finds no moral or rational reason for participants on either side of a conflict to accept the other even in a limited way. Practices of trust are needed to sustain toleration, he argues, but they require fairly substantial, though completely voluntary, restrictions on the use of public reason, and so are not easily adopted. Some chapters have been published in earlier versions. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
