Overview

Tsumiko inherits an ancestral home, a vast fortune, and a butler who isn’t exactly human.

Humanity is rocked by the Emergence of a people who call themselves the Amaranthine. They are our myths and legends come to life. Neither human nor animal, yet embracing qualities of both, the inhuman races inspire both awe and fear. Every newsfeed is clogged with updates about the peace process, but some places don’t concern themselves with worldly affairs. Like the girls’ school run by Saint Midori’s of the Heavenly Lights, where Tsumiko Hajime grew up.

A letter from a long-lost aunt names Tsumiko heiress to an ancestral estate and its accompanying fortune. Only the legacy comes with an aloof heirloom: an inhuman butler. Argent has served the Hajime family for centuries, and Tsumiko must renew the generational bond or he’ll die. Argent hates her for the hold she has over him, but he craves her soul almost as much as he craves his freedom.

I read Ilona Andrews and subscribe to their newsletter. This book was recommended and am I ever glad it was! I was instantly drawn in to this fantasy world of humans, reivers, beacons, battlers, and the Amaranthine. If you like fantasy, heas, excellent writing, tight plotting, then you will love this book! It was fantastic and I could not put it down. I can't wait until the next one comes out, it can't be too soon.

Recommended by Ilona Andrews and she/They were SOoooooo right. I really liked the World building in this book. The characters at first might seem like archetypes or a bit expected, but as you read and get to know them you see beneath the surface. There are hidden depths and assumptions are proved wrong. It is very optimistic so if you like your dark and depressing dystopias with little to no hope then this is not for you.

Very good, this that catches your interest write-off and holds it all the way through. I recommended starting it in the morning on a weekend because you won't want to stop until you finish it. I recommend it.

Would have given it 5stars except once in a while the main characters were a bit flat. But overall a good read, no problems finishing the book, definitely wanted to know what happened! Enjoyed the ending, too--good wrap up. Book kind of reminds me of Mcalroy's The Grey Horse.

I loved this book. I reread it a couple times the week after I first bought it, and every read through I'd find some detail I'd missed, and it was so wonderful. I highly recommend this to everyone. If you're a fan of beautifully written characters and alternate universes, this is a great book to read.
