Tudor Church Music, Vol. 2

Of all the polyphonic choral music the Tallis Scholars have recorded, the early English style featured on this set and its companion release (Tudor Church Music, Vol. 1), with its dazzling high treble parts and luminous sonorities, must rank among the finest work they have done to date. It is truly atmoshperic -- Henry VIII would have known this sound from childhood and may well have included some of the music recorded here at his coronation. Encompassing four discs in all, these two volumes feature composers from John Browne to Robert White and offer the listener over five hours of truly captivating music.

This is glorious music. I think I've listened to this CD five times already. The Tallis Scholars present this music like no other group. I am a tremendous fan of this time of music and have an extensive collection. No other group or artist approaches this music with the same dedication to detail and proper performance, This was my first experience with John Sheppard's music. It was wonderful and wonderfully done as was the snippit of Thomas Tallis and Robert White. Dazzling music with dazzling work by the Scholars. I have volume one and the Scholars Thomas Tallis album as well as their Requiem album and they will all be listened again and again and enjoyed thoroughly each time.
