Tune It In

You don't expect to hear funky wah-wah guitars on a smooth jazz album, but not every contemporary pop instrumentalist has the wit and savvy of Tom Grant. On the opening track title tune of TUNE IT IN, the smooth jazz pianist pays tribute to, of all things, Isaac Hayes's "Shaft." Bursts of groove-guitar work slip in and out of the number, giving it an infectiously rhythmic feel. (Kudos must be shared with the composer and co-producer of "Tune It In," Phil Baker, who plays bass, guitar, and keyboards, and is also responsible for the drum programming on the song.) The title track may be a highlight, but other performances have their share of snap and savory sonic coloring. Grant brings his own romantic edge to a remake of the Vanessa Williams hit "Save the Best For Last" and "Black Orpheus," the classic Luis Bonfa composition, featuring an attractively laid-back vocal from the pianist himself. No slouch in the writing department, Grant -- collaborating with Baker - turns in a few smooth jazz gems: "Mysterious Smile," "Overnight Sensation," and "Firefly" are as bouncy as new sneakers, while "Walking On the Wild Side" has a melodic hook to kill for. The leader's piano may be the focal point of the recording, but effective contributions from sympathetic supporting players including Baker, saxophonist Patrick Lamb, and guitarist-keyboardist Ray Oibiedo frame Grant's playing tastefully.
