In this debut picture book, fairies inspire children to become environmental caretakers.

“Fairy, fairy twinkle bright / fairy, fairy shine your light”—with a simple rhyming text and palpably earnest intent, Toma invites preschoolers to realize that they have the power to make a difference in the world. (The author is described on her website as an angel therapist and medium.) In the tale’s mostly outdoor scenes—featuring soft hues, rainbows, flowers, and butterflies—children are rendered by digital artist Frongia with subtle racial and ethnic differences. The smiling human characters are accompanied by equally diverse fairies (light and dark skin, pointy ears, hair of various shades, and colorful wings). The fairies zip through the pages, leaving luminous trails and “lighting the way” for children to appreciate happy, everyday moments (eating treats, playing outside, sharing laughter). In a shift to an environmental theme, the fairies’ human friends observe them protecting nature by darting “so quickly here and there / to help the animals, trees and air,” although the vague visual examples of these efforts are disappointing. But the worthy messages will be apparent to the work’s target audience. Inspired to follow the fairies’ lead, the relatable child characters are shown being kind to animals, helping a grown-up plant a tree, and picking up trash. This call to positive action is underscored in one of the story’s last images: an international representation of children joining hands in friendship to encircle Earth.

A buoyant, if visually uneven, tale that encourages kid empowerment and appreciation for nature.
