“Elora’s next movement came so quickly had I blinked I would have missed it. A loud clap rang out in the aisle and Dustin’s head snapped to the side. His hand flew to cover his cheek and I gasped, not believing she’d hit him in the middle of a supermarket where everyone could see. By the looks of the startled glances thrown our way, neither could the other customers along the same aisle.” Abuse is never an easy concept to read about, much less write about. What makes someone feel the desire to mentally and/or physically torment another individual? Some of the answers can be found in this novel. Hoddell captivates her readers with a traumatic connection that is shared between two young adults—striving to find their own way in life. This story is insightful, compassionate and emotionally heart-wrenching. By reading the words that Hoddell writes in this second installment of the Chequered Flag Series, readers are able to experience the hardships as well as the freedom that is perceived by both remembering and letting go of painful experiences. Dustin and Elora’s relationship is a sham, always has been and always will be. What does he get out of pouring his heart out to her? Black and blue ribs, scratches down his face and one very major and life-altering confession that spins his world off of its axis. His life has reached rock bottom and everyone around him becomes a fading memory as he drinks the pain away. All, except a new neighbor by the name of Tazia Nixon. Taz has those eyes like his, the ones that can see deeper than appearance alone. She understands his pain and she definitely has some secrets and hardships that she keeps filed away deep inside as well. Will both Dustin and Tazia learn how to trust each other with their secrets to find peace and recovery or will the twisted minds of those in their life, come back to wreck it once more? Again, Hoddell seems to fluently understand the psychological aspect of her characters in this second installment. It is apparent that a great deal of research has been completed in order to make these characters credible or plausible in a balanced fashion. Both types of abuse are prevalent in this novel, but what is even more eye-opening, is that the male character is suffering from the hand of a female character. During the first installment, the plot revolved around Raine and Teo with only minor glimpses into the life of Dustin. The way that his character was portrayed allowed the reader to think that the abuse may have only been emotional. In this second installment, Hoddell also delves into the life of Tazia and what her secrets and struggles are. When both characters are side by side, their lives up until this point and the torment that they faced are equally heart-wrenching and painful to read about. The author is very descriptive in her wording, allowing her characters to become extremely convincing. It would not be difficult to find sympathy for several of these characters along the way. Not only does the author succeed in character development and originality, she has created an understanding for her readers of what an emotional breakdown and reconstruction consists of. It’s not easy! A loss so tragic is what binds both individuals together, but strength can prevail if you are willing. Due to the psychological insights and intensity of the story—Hoddell has a mesmorizing novel that will shed some light on what it takes to fight the fear and pain caused by others. If you are a reader of new adult and college as well as psychological fiction, this may interest you. A free copy was exchanged for an honest review of this fictional piece.

This is the second book in Ms. Hoddell's Chequered Flag series, but can be read as a standalone. However, I do not recommend skipping Chameleon Soul or any of her books! Ms. Hoddell has a way of tackling difficult subjects or subjects that not many Authors will touch on and bringing them to light. I love the depth of Mia's characters, how they grow, show us so much of their life, and we feel as if we are right there with them.. A solid 5 stars, which would be more, if possible!! I recommend all of her books and look forward to reading anything that she writes.
