Description: This quick reference echocardiography book is appropriately low on pathophysiology and high on visuals (echo images). It offers a companion website with video echocardiograms for some of the chapters.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a starter resource and quick handy reference for basic echocardiography. This is a worthy objective and this handbook is needed. The print version is of excellent quality and is accompanied by online videos of many of the echocardiographs.
Audience: This is intended for veterinary students studying cardiology and during the clinical year, for interns and residents in small animal specialties, and for cardiology interns and beginner residents. It is also a very useful resource for small animal practitioners who are beginning to use ultrasound techniques to evaluate the heart.
Features: The handbook begins with an explanation of the knobs used for basic echocardiography, moves on to discuss normal cat and dog echo images and how to obtain an image, and then covers the basic measurements of size and function. Lastly, it covers common heart diseases. The imaging planes chapter is very well done and includes numerous diagrams superimposed over echo images to demonstrate where to position the probe and where the sound beams spread. A plethora of high quality images illustrate each aspect of a condition, which is very helpful for novices to begin to grasp identification of abnormal images.
Assessment: This is an essential resource for veterinary students, interns, residents, and practitioners. It is portable, easy to use, and loaded with helpful images to guide readers to a greater understanding of the basics of echocardiography. It replaces the previous edition, which is no longer available. The author makes it clear that this is not the definitive resource on the subject, but is designed as a quick reference, and it is successful as that.
