I didn't want to put this book down once I started it!  Normally, I do not read historical fiction.  However, a friend recommended this book, and I was pleasantly surprised by what a great read this was.  Good tempo, great story, great prose!  I loved it!

I loved this book! I didn't know much about the Dixie Mission prior to reading this story which is amazing considering its historical significance. The plot was gripping. The characters were well developed. The setting was beautifully described. This is one of my favorite books.

Like the best of historical fiction, this novel makes the period depicted (during the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War-late 1930's and the 1940's) come alive and transports you to a different time and place, all the while captivating your interest with its excellent prose and powerful storyline. This is a story of two men whose background could not have been more different. Yet because of circumstances beyond their control, their paths converge, leading to a poignant tale that challenges the meaning of loyalty, love, friendship, ideology, compassion, and courage. It is particularly notable that the author is able to weave the moral ambiguities into the geo-political realities of the time. The novel is full of well researched historical details, yet without ever coming across as pedantic. In today's world where we are constantly reminded of China's economic prowess and its special brand of capitalism, it is both refreshing and instructive to read about a time when two men transcended their cultural, political, and historical constraints to demonstrate the commonality of our shared humanity. This book is a great read on many levels: it has appeal to anyone who is interested in an exciting story well told; but it is especially profitable for students of history who are not familiar with this period which is often neglected in the West. I would even venture to suggest this book as a fantastic selection for book clubs where it will certainly be a pleasurable read while generating much engaging discussion.

This book should be made into a movie! If you like American history and exciting war stories, don’t miss this book. It reads just like a movie. I hope it becomes one someday. The action sequences are thrilling and realistic. Lam crafts his scenes perfectly, wasting not a word on superfluous details, showing just the right amount of emotion, action, description, and historical detail. I read some of the battle scenes over again just because they were so well done. The ending is great. Surprising. Emotional. I highly recommend this book!

Wonderful book. Best I’ve read in a long time. Good for a Book Club. Full disclosure: I am a fan of historical fiction and especially novels of WWII. Perhaps that is why I loved this book so much. I think everyone would enjoy it, but especially readers who enjoy learning about places and history that they don’t already know a lot about. The two characters, David and Yuen, are beautifully portrayed. Each man has faults. Each man tries to do what it best, but the line between what is right and what is wrong is sometimes very gray, especially in war-time. These two characters draw you in from the beginning of the book and you can’t wait to see what will happen to them. The second half of the book was so riveting that I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to find out what happens to them. I am going to recommend this book to all my friends.

Fabulous novel! Emotional war story with great characters- hard to put down. When someone recommended this book to me I thought it was just a war story. It is that, and it’s based on actual history, but the thing that made this one of the best books I’ve read all year is the characters. The book is based on two men, David and Yuen, who have nothing in common and butt heads in every conceivable way. But they learn to rely on each other as they go on a mission behind enemy lines. It was fascinating to see how two soldiers, one an idealistic, immature American, the other a pragmatic, cynical Chinese Communist, might become like brothers in battle. David’s romance with Katherine, a British journalist who is struggling to prove herself far from home, is well drawn, but the real “love” story is between David and Yuen. The ending is a tear-jerker. I recommend this to anyone who likes historical fiction with characters you not only cheer for, but also hope desperately will win out in the end. A perfect book for any book club.
