Overview

Type X by M.A. Phipps

No matter what I do, no matter what steps I take to avoid it,
I'm always playing right into somebody's hand.

Playing the role I was destined for.

Two years have passed since her willing return to the DSD, and Wynter Reeves is no longer the timid girl who only wanted to blend in. Strong, confident, and in control of her once debilitating powers, the world trembles at her feet while news of what she's capable of spreads like fire among the State's enemies. As the death toll rises and Dr. Richter further warps her into a weapon of war, Wynter is forced to embrace the daunting reality of what she's become. With the remnants of her humanity hanging on by a shoestring, she must choose between the one sacrifice that could lead to her salvation or the dark path of destruction from which there can be no return.

Torn between two sides of a war she never asked for, will Wynter find her freedom, or will she be doomed to remain a monster forever?

Reviewed by Kim Anisi for Readers' Favorite Type X by M.A. Phipps continues the story of Project W.A.R. It is the second book in a series, and it would be strongly recommended to read the excellent book 1 first to fully understand the plot. Wynter Reeves has been turned into the State’s weapon, with a collar not only allowing her control over her destructive powers, but also controlling her in a way. Every day, Richter takes some of her blood, and almost every day, Wynter is sent out to kill often innocent people. She has lost much of her memories. Then, during one mission, Wynter is abducted by PHOENIX, the opposing party to the State. She feels the characters surrounding her are vaguely familiar, but do they have any better intentions than the State? Isn’t each side just looking for power and after their own good? And which side is eventually responsible for the looming destruction of the world? Wynter remembers her visions of the future – but is there anything she can do to stop the future from coming to pass? Could it even be her own actions to prevent that future that eventually lead to that future? I enjoyed reading Type X by M.A. Phipps just as much as reading the first book in the series, maybe even a little more – and it’s always great to see authors who can keep up the quality in their work when they write a series. Far too often, you get a good or even great book 1 of a series, and then the following parts are disappointing, make you yawn, or even question the author’s sanity and intelligence. Fortunately, the story around Wynter was neither disappointing, nor boring. It was an entertaining few hours, and it didn’t take me long to finish the book. It’s the kind of story where you think “one more chapter won’t do any harm,” and you end up finishing the book! I would have liked so see some more interaction between the characters, i.e. a bit more of others than just Wynter being the centre of attention. But I guess I am one of the minority who wouldn’t mind a slower paced development! Maybe some of the characters could get some free-standing short stories about their past dedicated to them?
