Atkins, the Zone, the South Beach Diet. Anyone with a serious weight problem has probably tried and failed to use one of these diets to lose weight. And it’s not their fault. According to weight loss specialist Dr. Scott Rigden, there is no miracle diet that works for everyone because everyone possesses a unique body type and corresponding metabolism. People can be divided into five different metabolic types that have a corresponding plan of specific dietary and lifestyle habits that make weight loss work. In this book, Rigden helps readers determine their metabolic type and then devotes a chapter to each one with dietary, exercise, supplement, and medicine advice complete with glossaries and case studies. He also includes chapters on emotional eating and how to mentally prepare for weight loss. Readers find out why conventional diets don’t work and, using the guidelines in this book, jump-start their metabolism and experience safe, permanent weight loss.

I am a yoyo dieter, who successfullly loses 40+ pounds of excess weight, keeps it off for a few years, and slowly regains all that I have lost. I have seen numerous physicians, tried Weight Watchers, Medifast, the Diabetic diet, and most the popular diets of the last 20-30 years. They work for a time. WHY? I am not a binge eater, nor a closet eater, nor eat enormous quantities of food per day. FINALLY, a DOCTOR WHO SPECIALIZES IN UNHEALTHY OBERSITY has helped me understand WHY I have so much trouble with my weight.
It was as if a light bulb kept flashing when I thought honestly about myself and my wiehgt problems, and as I took the quizzes and read this experienced bariatric specialist's 5 metabolic syndrome types. Have I read some of the information before? Yes. But, in a realistic manner, Dr. Rigden explains the entirety of obesity syndrome, and the pros and cons of popular diets and melds the good into a manageable plan that will work.
I KNOW THIS. In three months, I have progressed though the recommendations in the book following the suggestions for insulin resistance, taken a good hard look at myself, my eating patterns, and physical activity, and have followed the diet. I eliminated sugar, and flour, and am forgiving myself the foods I do not like and do not want to eat, and the occasional flub. I have lost 28 pounds in about three months. I was able to follow the diet through Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Was it hard? Not really.
No diet or exercise program is ever a miracle, and I have searched for it. For me, this book is like going to a doctor who has worked with, labored beside and participated in his patients' successes and failures until he found a solution to their obesity. He wants to helo me.
A valuable tidbit that I wish to mention is that he feels his patients' pain - he TELLS US that he had a significant long term weight problem that he struggled with and conquered. He has had the experience of gaining and losing, and working though the emotions that are attached to your self-esteem when you are obese. He has spent a career helping people he can identify with, and in my point of view, this book is a culmination of this experience, and the desire to help others conquer these obesity problems and become healthy, active human beings.
Good luck! I am -28 and counting!
