Unbelievable: My Front-Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History by Katy Tur

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Compelling… this book couldn’t be more timely.” – Jill Abramson, New York Times Book Review

From the Recipient of the 2017 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism

Called "disgraceful," "third-rate," and "not nice" by Donald Trump, NBC News correspondent Katy Tur reported on—and took flak from—the most captivating and volatile presidential candidate in American history.

Katy Tur lived out of a suitcase for a year and a half, following Trump around the country, powered by packets of peanut butter and kept clean with dry shampoo. She visited forty states with the candidate, made more than 3,800 live television reports, and tried to endure a gazillion loops of Elton John’s "Tiny Dancer"—a Trump rally playlist staple.

From day 1 to day 500, Tur documented Trump’s inconsistencies, fact-checked his falsities, and called him out on his lies. In return, Trump repeatedly singled Tur out. He tried to charm her, intimidate her, and shame her. At one point, he got a crowd so riled up against Tur, Secret Service agents had to walk her to her car.

None of it worked. Facts are stubborn. So was Tur. She was part of the first women-led politics team in the history of network news. The Boys on the Bus became the Girls on the Plane. But the circus remained. Through all the long nights, wild scoops, naked chauvinism, dodgy staffers, and fevered debates, no one had a better view than Tur.

Unbelievable is her darkly comic, fascinatingly bizarre, and often scary story of how America sent a former reality show host to the White House. It’s also the story of what it was like for Tur to be there as it happened, inside a no-rules world where reporters were spat on, demeaned, and discredited. Tur was a foreign correspondent who came home to her most foreign story of all. Unbelievable is a must-read for anyone who still wakes up and wonders, Is this real life?

After reading the sample, I can't wait to read the whole thing. Funny yet insightful. Confirms what I often thought during the election process.

After reading the sample, I decided to buy the book, and I'm glad I did. Katy Tur rose to the occasion (in spite of all the Trump craziness thrown at her) and grew into a solid political reporter. I watched her on tv and trusted her on-the-spot coverage. She was a real observer and commentator who called out lies, and survived Trump's tweets and tantrums. After reading her behind-the-scenes account, I admire her even more.

Katie Tur gives us the back story to what we saw every night on the evening news, and she does it without recrimination. Her words have the raw, uncensored ring of truth. She is a credit to the profession of journalism, but she's also a force that should not be underestimated.

Great insight into what her life was like on the campaign trail. Great recap of the campaign, so quickly we can forget.

I had other plans for my Saturday, but couldn't put it down. This is a memoir - it is Katy's story of her time following the Trump campaign, and it is also a story about the Trump campaign. Her personality shines through (and makes the book, really - there were times I laughed out loud ) as she shares openly about her thoughts and feelings as related to this job and her own life; she does this while also offering an unbiased observation of what was happening on the ground. Go Katy!!!!

Good for you, Katy! Didn't know if I could bear reliving it but your perspective made it possible. Keep on going.

Interesting to learn about the world of TV journalists, but disappointing due to a lack of insights into who Trump is and why he behaves as he does. Perhaps the point is that he is unknowable.

I watched Ms. Tur from her first interview with Trump. I got the sense she was able to get him to talk and that she saw him for exactly what he was. So I followed her as she followed him and as I listened I too got the unbelievable feeling that he could win. I recommend this book as an interesting inside look of the recent presidential campaign.

I am a ferocious reader and by far this is he most enjoyable read I've had this year. Katy is smart, insightful and someone you wouldn't mind hanging out with. It took me only a few hours to read because it was written in a way that flowed seamlessly from one page to the next, like a good conversation with a close friend.

A great read! At times funny, serious, and outrageous, Katy and her colleagues did a tour-de-force investigative reporting of collecting all the ups and downs of the Trump campaign. I could not put this book down. It definitely shows (to a non-journalist person such as myself) all the tribulations and difficulties that come with this job. Although covering Trump is a unique experience: death threats, loud verbal slurs, and possible violence (if it were not for the secret service agents protecting the press guard). Katy did a fantastic job; I felt in the audience at these rallies with her.

Could not put it down.

Obviously Biased and only a book you would read IF you don't like Trump for the most part. Would be nice to see more neutral un-biased opinions on this subject but un-fortunately everyone will only see things from a right or left perspective and this is why nothing important ever gets done! BTW THEY ALL LIE!

What a fantastic read! I loved Katy Tur's first-hand account of covering the Trump campaign from start to finish. The book was very well written and gave good insight into the life and times of a television reporter which are not all fun and games. I was glad the author did confirm that the "supporters" at the rallies were paid actors with their shirts, hats, signs and able to chant all at the right times. I think it was very irresponsible of Trump to constantly bash the news media thus putting the reporters in danger from his vigilante supporters. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
