Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely

Experience all the feels in this unforgettable second-chance standalone romance from number-one New York Times best-seller Lauren Blakely!

I didn't break her heart, and she didn't break mine - we broke each other's.

I never stopped loving her, but time and distance played its cruel role in ripping us apart three years ago when she moved halfway around the world. Now after all those endless miles away, she's returned...but I'm not the guy I was before.

Beautiful, kind, and loving, she's the same - my hope. The only one who can make a day better, who can make me feel again with one kiss, one touch, one night.

There's so much I have to put back in place now that I'm alone and on my own. Things I never wanted at the age of 25. When I receive an unexpected letter that might hold the clues to everything I desperately need to understand about my family, I'm sure I have to follow it. But that means leaving her once more.

She says she'll come with me, and having her by my side will unbreak my heart...or destroy it.

That's the chance I have to take.

This book is such a departure from Laura Blakely’s normal style. Do not take that to mean it isn’t good - it’s wonderful but Andrew will break your heart while working through his loss. I love that the book starts out with him loving Holland. This was an emotional read but worth it.

5 stars I purchased the novella Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely and this review was given freely. This is an emotional and poignant short romance spanning two countries and featuring Andrew's 5 steps of grief to healing, his becoming able to both receive and give unconditional love, his being able to connect with the family he has left, and finally his second chance at love with Holland. Over all, this a moving story with a heavy base of sadness balanced by uplifting friends,Sandy the dog, and a surprise happy ending.

This was really good! I usually try to go into books as blindly as possible and I don't think that I beyond Lauren Blakely's name and the shirtless guy on the cover when I made the decision to read this book. I thought that I had a pretty good idea of what kind of book this would be and expected a fun little romance. I did get a romance but to me this book was really all about Andrew. I am so glad that I had the chance to listen to this audiobook. When we meet Andrew at the start of this book, he is at a very low point. He is deep in grief after losing his brother who was the person he was closest to. He is not handling things well at all. I felt so bad for Andrew but I completely understood some of the things he was feeling. I thought that his thoughts during this time were very well done and felt very authentic. Holland and Andrew have known each other for a very long time. Their parents were friends and they dated for a while. Their relationship ended largely because Holland was living in Tokyo while Andrew needed to be in the United States. I love a good second chance romance and these two were really great together. They never stopping caring about each other and the chemistry between them was great. Holland seemed to understand exactly what Andrew needed and was very clear with her expectations. Both of the narrators really nailed this performance. I had never listened to any of Joe Arden's work before a few months ago but I think that this is the third time that I have listened to him in just a few weeks. I am really impressed by his work and I thought that this was an exceptional performance. He does such a good job with the wide range of emotions that Andrew goes through in this story. Since this was Andrew's story more than anything, I think that Joe Arden read a bit more of the book than the female narrator, Erin Mallon. This was my first time listening to Erin Mallon and I really liked her narration. I thought she did a great job with Holland and really helped to bring the story to life. These two worked really well together and I wouldn't hesitate to listen to either narrator again in the future. I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. I love second chance romances and books that deal with grief are also a favorite so this was a great pick for me. This audiobook does include a short story, The Story of Us, that takes up the last hour or so of the total running time. I cannot wait to read more of Lauren Blakely's work. I received a review copy of this audiobook from Lauren Blakely Books via Inkslinger PR.

Unbreak My Heart is Lauren Blakely's most poignant book to date. I was swept up immediately in the difficult journey that Andrew Peterson must follow in order to find his peace. His daily life after his beloved brother's death is one of mere existence. Andrew is quietly desperate to feel again and to figure out how to go on without his best friend by his side. Imagine his surprise in the realization that the key to his happiness is not just the love he has always had for one Holland St. James, the girl who got away, but the strength to find that little piece of nirvana that lies deep within all of us. This book is serenely powerful. It is not your usual kind of romance. Yes there is that chemistry that can no longer be denied between Andrew and Holland after 3 years apart. But I loved that Holland cared for Andrew enough to push him to find his way back to her without her being his crutch. The Author once again gives us incredible secondary characters who guide our hero in the most subtle of ways, allowing him to finally grab that "a-ha" moment he so desperately craves. There is true adoration between Andrew and these wonderful people, some good friends and family including the requisite 4-legged companion, and others newfound confidants. As profound a loss he has suffered, not only because of his brother Ian but also his parents some years prior, watching as Andrew realizes just how special his life is, was worth all the pain both he and us as readers had to endure. It just made me feel good. And you can't get much better than that! Unbreak My Heart is purely uplifting. I couldn't put it down once I started and thoroughly enjoyed every single word. I was silently cheering for Andrew and Holland to find their happy and was in Andrew's corner from the very start. The familiar ease in which Andrew and Holland find themselves (in yet another exotic locale the Author is so fond of) was a joy to read. Even as they fumble around one another, their love is undeniable and the spark between them is always present. And yet this is so much more your typical love story. It's a cathartic adventure that sincerely filled my soul. This one is a keeper of the highest degree and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I happily give this book a huge 5+ stars!

I cannot believe I have read two highly emotional books directly after each other. I may need hugs. Unbreak My Heart is a poignant look at grief and the effect the loss of a loved one has on the people left behind. Woven into the story is a romance that extends time and distance. Although circumstances have not been conducive to pursuing a relationship until Andrew and Holland are reunited following the loss of Andrew's older brother to cancer. Andrew is struggling to deal with the loss and his ongoing feelings for Holland. Anyone having lost a loved one with fully empathise with Andrew and understand the emotional pit you can fall into. Emotions are heightened and decisions impaired especially where numbing the pain is concerned. An unexpected letter sends Andrew on a journey of discovery and gives him a new awareness of his brother and the decisions he made. Unbreak My Heart makes you confront others views on how they wish to live their lives and in that respect also how they wish to die.  Holland is a caregiver by nature, a fixer even at the detriment of her own emotions. We can learn a lot from Holland and the way in which she treats others.  Andrew and Holland belong together, everything else is just detailed, but those details take a lot of working out  Need a good cry, a bit of swooning and a new appreciation for life - Unbreak My Heart is for you.

How do you find the courage to walk away even as your heart is begging to stay? Andrew and Holland have a fight on their hands. Blakely pens the most haunting love story of the year. Unbreak My Heart is a story about love at the best and worst of times. To reach the rainbow, you have to survive the storm. From heartbreaking grief, to unanswered questions, shocking revelations and undying love, there's turbulence at every turn. Yet despite the pain there are moments of intense joy. Lauren Blakely has written a prolific masterpiece that deals with real emotions. Arden and Mallon bring that intensity to life with sincerity and soulfulness that speak to the pain, inspire the heart and lay claim to the soul.

I knew going in this was going to me a much more emotional read than Lauren's rom com reads. Andrew is dealing with loss and trying to figure out how to cope and move on. It was a very thoughtful read and I enjoyed the depth of Andrew's character. Holland is trying to be there for Andrew how she can, but they have their past to deal with. They both have strong feelings and great chemistry that time won't change. I enjoyed reading them try to negotiate it and figure out how they fit together. The book was such a sweet and emotional journey and I really enjoyed it!

I'm absolutely itching to go into detail about which parts of the story brought me to tears, but I'm holding off simply because there isn't an inkling of it in the blurb. Yes, this is me basically trying to be good and not spoil it for anyone who has yet to read it, but suffice it to say that there are aspects of the book that, indeed, broke my heart. Do I want said heart unbroken? Surprisingly enough, no. I'll consider my heart--which will heal quite nicely, give or take a re-read or two from the author's rom-com collection--plus the spent tissues and puffy eyes casualties of one of the best reads I've had the distinct privilege of reading this year. This novel is the must-read among must-reads. Andrew is a man whose life has been in a limbo of sorts for the past four weeks, and it takes the arrival of one letter from Japan to give him a purpose--a kind of mission to figure certain things and one particular person out. His is a story of finding the footing he's lost and it isn't an easy journey. By his side is Holland, the woman who owns his heart. It's a tale of continuing to live amidst loss and knowing that home truly is where the heart is. There were countless memorable moments in this book, but there was one part--when Andrew receives a letter right after the most life-changing of secrets is revealed to him--that stood out. Unbreak My Heart reminded me that life is always at its best when lived at your best and through your worst; it is Lauren Blakely at her best. Five-plus stars. ♥

Bravo Lauren Blakely, Bravo!! All the stars for this absolutely stunning story, that was so much more than a love story; it was a learn to live again story. It was a learn to understand and accept the choices people make story. And it was a second chance love story. Andrew Peterson’s journey is a difficult one at times and will certainly make you feel so much. My heart broke for Andrew and I wanted to climb through the pages and hug him so hard. I cried, I laughed, I swooned and finally I felt joy and peace just like Andrew did. Holland has been Andrew’s friend for a while. They started as friends and then became more but then she left to go to nursing school and left him in the process. They reconnect when she comes back but she does not want to be his crutch. She wants him to love her and want her but not to rely on her in order to survive. Holland plays a huge role in his healing process and helps to put his heart back together, but so many other things that Andrew discovers on his own, will be what truly makes the difference for him. I love their relationship and I love how he loves Sandy, his dog. Because how can you not love a man who loves his dog! While this may not be the typical hysterical sexy romcom this author has been showering us with lately, it is an incredible emotional ride that will stay with you long after you finish reading. This is definitely one of my top 3 reads this year!!

A Review of Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely Andrew and Holland - 5+++++ Stars In a complete departure from the normal style of book I'm used to getting from Ms. Blakely, this book had me hooked from the first page. Ms. Blakely certainly knows how to write a story that will rip your heart out and then piece it back together, bit by bit. I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book without knowing anything about it—no blurb or character names. There are some funny parts and some very touching parts as well as those scenes that will tear your heart apart. Make sure you have plenty of tissues around, because I was doing the whole ugly cry during the last couple of chapters. I happen to think tears are carthatic for a lot of us and this author definitely takes you on a journey with this one. This is one book that I will purchase so that I can re-read it multiple times, even knowing how much it is going to hurt. It's going on my list of top 5 books this year. Favorite quote: “At the end of my life, when I’m looking back, will I regret not doing this?” **Honest review voluntarily provided from a Complimentary Copy**

Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely is a heart wrenching, but also heartwarming, story of loss, family, love, romance and healing. Andrew has just lost his brother and no longer has living family close to him. He's on his own and grieving. His friends, neighbors and everyone around him are giving him leeway to do anything, and he knows it. They are supportive of him, but in truth he needs more. He needs to discover himself, find his life again. Holland is different from all the other people. Not only her past history with Andrew but her background makes her a person who can actually help him, and she wants to. As they journey together grief and personal history cause a very complicated dynamic that makes this a different and special book by Ms. Blakely. These characters are complex and give a real feeling of connection while still being romantic and witty as they progress. Overall Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely was a great story that brings out real feelings from readers and is very well done. I very much enjoyed reading it. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance review copy of this book I received for free in exchange for my open and honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.)

This is a very different romance than what I’m used to from Lauren Blakely, as the love between Andrew and Holland was strong and not in much doubt. Andrew had a family tragedy  that had  left Andrew  a broken man, and this is his path to Unbreak and repair his heart. This really pulled on my heartstrings, I couldn’t put it down . This is a beautiful book, and Andrew’s brother had left all the tools for him to recover. Andrew and Holland was madly in love, but had to separate three years previously when Holland had no choice but train in Tokyo where her family was. Andrew was at Law school in America. His brother travelled to Tokyo so much he had an apartment there. When he was ill Holland came back to the states to nurse him. This is Andrew’s journey, and Holland is there every step of the way, I was a blubbering mess as I was gripped in this wonderful story.

5++++++ Stars!! All the stars and then some!!! Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely is hands down one of favorite books by this author to date. It was so unlike her other books. So different from the rom coms we've come to expect. Heartbreakingly beautiful, full of angst and love. It's a journey of self healing, living life to the fullest and second chances. I absolutely loved it! I was so impressed and in awe of Lauren Blakely's words. If I could have reached into the pages and hugged Andrew, I would have on multiple occasions. He has had so much loss in his life. My heart hurt for him. His most recent loss left him more broken and jaded than any before it. When he receives a letter that leaves him with questions surrounding his brother's last year of life, he and the only girl he's ever loved take off to Japan to seek answers. Once again Lauren Blakely does a incredible job describing the setting. She paints this gorgeous picture of a country I've never been to but have now added to my list of places to see. She makes it feel like we are right there with Andrew and Holland in Japan. I cannot recommend Unbreak My Heart enough!! Lauren Blakely's writing is brilliant, and perfect and I just loved it so much!! Pick this beauty up immediately! Go Dodgers!!

This was such an emotional second chance love story! Faithful Lauren Blakely readers should note that this is not her typical fun and lighthearted romcom. Unbreak My Heart takes readers on a heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting, journey through grief and finding one's true happiness. I really loved the overall message of the book about being at peace with yourself, appreciating the people in your life, and living life to the fullest. Happiness is different to every person and seeing Andrew discover not only what brought his brother Ian happiness, but also him finding his own was so beautiful. The tone was definitely more somber and serious for the majority of the book, but I feel it was necessary to see Andrew's full character arc. His relationship with Holland was so easy and natural, that my heart hurt so much that it had been derailed by timing, distance, and circumstance. Their playful banter and chemistry will make your heart sing and you won't be able to help yourself from rooting for them to find their HEA. I enjoyed both characters, but was very impressed by Holland and her unwillingness to be Andrew's crutch/drug as he healed. She could have easily given into her feelings regardless of the complications, but instead she chose to face the hard truths in the hopes of something even better in the future. Holland was truly a fantastic heroine. Readers may need a tissue or two for this one, but it will be well worth it in the end. *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book*

I usually know Lauren Blakely for her sexy rom com, but this book is very emotional, not the typical read and was a great surprise for me, even if my heart needs a bit of recovering after. This story is about Andrew, who is struggling after loss, he wants to find something to give him purpose, he then finds himself trying to get a way to find the girl that got away. Holland is that girl, they both separated years ago and now is back for some time. The story is emotional and sweet, there is a second chance of love and you will want that tortured hero to find himself again. I absolutely loved the message behind the story, this is a story you want to be reading.
bbarneybooks28 6 months ago
Dear Lauren Blakely, I’m sure while you were writing Andrew and Holland’s story that you felt a wide range of emotions, not only for what your characters were going through but also perhaps due to an array of memories of what you and those closest to you have had to deal with when it comes to grief, depression, loss, and loneliness, death, and cancer. These are not easy subjects to discuss or explore, but I can assure you that they desperately need to be; because if society talked openly about these topics then perhaps people could breathe easier...feel more comfortable to share their pain and their thoughts with others to prove just how alike they are and how their hearts struggle and break just like everyone else’s do. I have firsthand experience with what cancer, death, and grief can do to a family; I live with its effects still, almost on a daily basis, and it’s heartbreaking and emotionally draining, but it helps to know that I’m not alone in this fight or in these feelings and I gain strength from knowing that others stand beside me. Andrew and Holland’s feelings for one another resonate from the pages of Unbreak My Heart, but so do their individual dreams and goals, and while, at times, they find themselves off balance, contemplating what their next moves should be and how they’ll fit into each other’s lives, they slowly find their way...find the path that’s meant for each of them alone as well as the one that will allow them to finally get it right, find a balance, and be together in every way possible. Another valuable lesson that Unbreak My Heart teaches readers is that life is not easy and people can’t control other people’s actions, which sometimes means that they must deal with things that they never wanted to endure, but that doesn’t mean that life stops...that love stops...it just means that it needs to be handled in a way that allows forward movement, even if there are set backs and it almost feels impossible. What’s most intriguing and worthwhile about this story is how Andrew learns to live...learns to accept the circumstances that he’s in...learns to forgive himself and others for past misdeeds because in the grand scheme of things, focusing on regrets and painful moments forces Andrew to simply exist when he’s meant to flourish and to enjoy life’s precious moments. While readers may be used to and adore your romantic comedies, I’m so grateful for this story...for these characters...for your ability to tell, what has to be one of the most profound love stories that I’ve read in a long time, because it’s a love that has multiple categories and layers - love of self...love of family...love of friends...and the deepest love that can be felt between two people despite time apart and the struggles that occur. Some readers may feel that a heart cannot be unbroken…that once it’s fractured, it’s impossible to heal or be whole again, but through Andrew and Holland’s story, it’s clear that a heart most definitely can be repaired, and while all of its pieces may not fit into their old places, a new overall structure can be created, solidifying all parts, perhaps bending some in order to fit, but leaving not a single piece completely broken.

I've read quite a few of Lauren Blakely's books and I've enjoyed all of them. Some of them I liked and some of them I loved. With this book, I am kind of torn. There were parts of it that I liked and there were parts of it that I loved. So I can't really decide which way I want to go. Ultimately, this is a second chance story but I would say, not the conventional one where the characters had a huge falling out when they first split up. Here, it is more of a mutual agreement. I would even describe it in a way as friends to lovers. Andrew and Holland were two intriguing characters. I found the interactions between the two characters quite interesting and the chemistry and feelings between them are palpable. With that said, there were moments in the book where I felt, there was something missing in their story. I still can't figure out what it was but it made the story go a little bit slow for me. Somehow, I couldn't really feel the pain Andrew was feeling. I knew about it I didn't really relate to it. But the parts where my heart got broken and that I loved, were actually Andrew's memories of his brother. The way both Holland and Andrew were recalling certain times spent with Ian, just broke my heart. And when you add Kana's, I was a blubbering mess. So that's why, I am a little bit torn about this story. I hope I managed to express clearly my still tangled feeling about Unbreak My Heart. In any case, I would recommend every book lover to check it out. I think you would enjoy it. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Like all of you I read so many great books and I enjoy them all for different reasons. This author always makes me laugh and feel good and I always get wrapped up in her books and the wonderful characters she creates. This book is even better, it completely ripped my heart out from the very beginning and then slowly I mended just like Andrew did. I am a huge fan of this author so I love and read everything she writes but this has to be her absolute best book yet. I was so wrapped up in this story and these characters that I truly hurt for them. We all deal with the loss of someone we love at some point in our lives and we all deal with the pain differently. To experience the hurt and gut wrenching pain that Andrew was dealing with just ripped me apart emotionally. I could feel his pain and I wanted to crawl into the book and hug him. Holland is a brave, strong woman and I envy her character, to love someone so much that you realize you must step back and force them to heal on their own. To not be their crutch or drug, they must learn how to survive and move on with their life in their own way. I loved her character throughout the entire book. She is willing to sacrifice her heart so that Andrew can heal. The love these two have for one another is epic and they have to take a journey, literally to get to where they need to be. This book made me tear up several times both for being sad and for being truly happy. You will still get the funny, sexy back and forth banter you are used to with a Lauren Blakely book but you are going to get so much more. In this book she shows us how to hurt and it be ok to just hurt and then how to pick ourselves up and start the healing process. To understand we are the only one that can make us happy again, nothing or no one can do that for us. To also understand life has difficult choices we all have to make and we have to make our own decisions. No one can choose for us and we can’t choose our path for someone else, and in the end we have to be at peace with those decisions. This is my favorite book so far for 2018. I received an early copy to read and review. 10 stars for sure on this one. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it.

**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title in exchange for an honest review** Lauren Blakely is always one of my one-click authors and Unbreak My Heart truly does break your heart and then finds a way to put all the pieces back into place right where they are meant to be. This book is a departure from Blakely's usual fun, flirty rom coms, but it is still packed with her witty banter, hot sexy times and characters you're able to connect with. Andrew is at a place in his life where he is looking for purpose and direction. He's just lost his older brother to cancer and he's feeling beyond alone. Having lost his parents only a few years before and not being close to his sister, he doesn't have a family unit to lean on. The one person he seems to be gravitating toward is the person he lost several years ago after an amazing summer; the girl he has always loved, and still does, Holland. Holland is back in Andrew's life, at least for the time being. She is a nurse and her best opportunities are likely not in the immediate area, so her time being around Andrew again is going to be fleeting. She wants to help him, but she also doesn't want to be his crutch and she also doesn't want to fall for him again when she knows that it would never work with them so far apart. The two of them are definitely hovering between friends and more than friends and it's making it difficult on both of them. Much of the story centers on Andrew's journey to find answers surrounding his brother's death and for him to find some modicum of healing. He knows it isn't going to be easy, but it is something he needs to do to find the closure he ultimately seeks. The path is unclear and with just a few clues to go on, he sets out on an adventure that is going to change things in more ways than he can imagine. This journey is going to help him find peace, understanding and hope. This is one of the most raw books that Lauren Blakely has written. It's painful and emotional at times, but it has it's light moments as well. I ran the gamut of emotions with this book and I truly did feel like all of the pieces were in the exact right spot when we got to the end of the book. Life is about ups and downs and sometimes we don't understand why things happen, but they do because in the end, you're going to be exactly where you were meant to be and you'll be stronger for it when you come out on the other side. I highly recommend this book!

This book!! It’s not kidding, it will break your heart, but then it’ll put it back together again. Soo, so good. Andrew Peterson is a young guy who’s been through the wringer and he feels it. Well, actually, he doesn’t. He’s disconnected from his life, having reached the depths of despair and is relying on friends to help him make it through the day. He’s been drawn to the dark side to dull the pain that resides in his heart. There’s only one person who will make it better and even though she’s in his life for now, she won’t be for long. Holland St. james has loved Andrew for as long as she can remember. They had a sweet, wonderful summer three years ago when they were 22, but they still had school to finish. Andrew his law degree and Holland her nursing. Neither wanted to be apart but Holland’s college was thousands of miles away, across an ocean. They always meant to get back together at some point, but not like this. Holland worries that Andrew needs her for the wrong reasons, she wants to be there for him, but not as a crutch. Andrew needs answers to the questions burning a hole in his head and when the chance comes to get these answers he takes it, traveling across that once dividing ocean in search of the truth and everlasting love. This book torn me up. I cried so hard. It’s so heartbreaking at times but those are more than made up by the heartwarming ones that follow. Grab a box of tissues and be prepared to use it with this second chance romance.

Where do I start? Since I don’t tend to read many tear jerker books, I was nervous being told before I read it, this book would make me cry. Giving no spoilers, the subject matter is a serious and difficult one. Andrew has been going through a tough time personally. When his former girlfriend, Holland shows up at his front door, he’s forced to face everything keeping him from moving forward. Since I’m sure so many readers have gone through this to some extent, if not the same as Andrew. That’s what tugs at your heart. I don’t think you can help but think of family and friends in your own life. I know I did. This isn’t the typical Lauren Blakely story, and it was good going on this journey she’s created. It forces you to look at things, and see how you can make a change to make your own life better, even just a little bit. To be honest, I can’t take a large dose of these types of books, but I am so glad I got an early listen. Joe Arden and Erin Mallon do a fantastic job, and Joe really punched me in the heart w/his performance. It was outstanding!
