Under the Influence by L.B. Simmons

Dalton,

I loved you once. A love I thought irrevocable. A love I mistakenly believed could transcend both time and circumstance. Under the influence of my dimwitted, naïve, traitorous heart, I became intoxicated with what I now know was simply a figment of my self-indulgent imagination. So drunk on the feeling, I couldn't see what was right in front of my face. So foolishly enamored, I blindly followed my heart into the depths of an emotion that would ravage me.

Years later, I know now what I wish I knew then. I am stronger. Smarter. Tougher. I will not allow myself to be broken again.

I loved you.

I raged for you.

I wept for you.

And now, I'm letting you go.

Author's Note: Under the Influence is the journey of two childhood friends that spans the course of five pivotal years in their lives. It is a story about their discovery of true friendship as it blossoms into first love, their experience of crucial sacrifice and ultimate betrayal, and their endurance of agonizing heartbreak on the way to finding lasting redemption.

*****Due to themes of child abuse, domestic violence, sexual situations and explicit language, recommended for readers 17+*****

About the Author

After graduating from Texas A&M University, L.B. Simmons did what any biomedical science major could do. She entered the workforce as a full-time chemist. Years later, never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined herself a USA Today Bestselling contemporary romance author as well.

What began as a memoir for her children, ended up being her first self-published book, Running on Empty. Soon after, her girls were given reoccurring roles in the remainder of what became the Mending Hearts series.

L.B. Simmons doesn’t just write books. With each new work, she attempts to compose journeys of love and self-discovery so she may impart life lessons to readers. She’s tackled suicide, depression, bullying, eating disorders, as well as physical and sexual abuse, all the while weaving elements of humor into the storylines in effort to balance the difficult topics. Often described as roller coaster rides, her novels are known for eliciting a wide range of emotions in each story she tells.

Under the Influence is definitely a star crossed lovers tale. Young love in its most intense form. The best friend. The One who got away. THE ONE. It's a sad and tragic story of two lost souls who find their other half too soon. Life isn't fair and it's made obvious by the suffering in these pages. Be prepared for heartbreak but always be open to hope.

Overall Rating: 5 Rockin’ ★★★★★ Have you ever meet someone and known that that person was your destiny? In L.B. Simmons newest novel, Under the Influence, this beautifully written read is full of passion, love, and destiny all with an underlying truth about abuse. With masterfully created characters, the reader is drawn in from the beginning and held captive to end. Once again, L.B. has stepped up to the plate and delivered a high flying masterpiece. From the start of his life, Dalton Greer has struggled to stay afloat. Abused and forgotten, Dalton is drawn at a very young age into a life of crime. He was controlled by a monster that burrowed his talons deep into Dalton’s soul with no way of getting out. With that insidious hold, he can't have the one person that has always been in his heart, a part of his soul, Spencer Locke. However, because of what he has become he must protect her from the evil that surrounds him with his last breathe. He will keep her safe and deny his need to claim her. When she met Dalton Greer one night, many years ago, Spencer Locke formed a crush. From that first moment, Spencer felt Dalton was her destiny, her HEA. But the one thing standing in the way of that is Dalton himself. Spencer has patiently waited and will wait forever for the one person her heart beats for, Dalton. It's really amazing how life tends to hurt us all one way or another, while at the same time, life can give us unbelievable joy, happiness and love. L.B. Simmons brings to light in her books such tragedy and horrible circumstances that will tug at your heart strings in the most vulnerable way. I am such a huge fan of her work! This book shows nothing less than the excellent author that L.B. Simmons is. I faithfully await your next book! Under the Influence is a great addition to any library. Definitely a 5 star read!

Kinda boring! Long and too much telling of feelings! It got better towards the end, and I was happy when it was "The End!"

Spencer and Dalton have gone through a lot in their young lives.  Each has scars from a less than stellar beginning to their young lives and Dalton bears a strong rage because of it.  Spencer is his light and he believes he will tarnish her if he forms a romantic relationship with her.  Spencer takes a big gamble that pays off with Dalton finally admitting his feelings and for a short while there is peace and love in their lives.  It all comes to a screeching halt when a traumatic event happens on Spencer's 18th birthday.  Dalton is forced to make sacrifices in order to make a promise come to reality.  Spencer is devastated and tries to move on with her life.  Spencer is not given an answer to her question as to what happened and why for many years.  Dalton's plan for revenge against Silas takes years to come to fruition and he has to hope that Spencer does not move on in that time and keeps for love for him alive.  When they do come face to face many years later, Dalton has to work to get Spencer to forgive him and knows it will take even longer to get her to forget and trust him again.  It had great suspense at times and secrets are revealed that show more than Dalton is involved in his revenge plot.  I liked the ending but felt that Spencer forgave Dalton too quickly after the amount of time that she was kept in the dark.  His reasons were valid but the fact he didn't even let her know the danger she was potentially in just rubbed me the wrong way.  His mentor also was forgiven too quickly for my liking, especially in light of his relationship with her through those years.

I was eagerly awaiting the opportunity to read this book after being teased with Spencer & Dalton's story through bits and pieces here and there. This book was so worth it. Lb Simmons gave me characters to sympathize with, fall in love with and hope for.  I love stories that make you FEEL. Stories that tear at your heart. Stretch it, shatter it into a million pieces and slowly put the pieces, no matter how jagged, back together.  Dalton and Spencer have been friends for years with stronger feelings lurking beneath the surface. Determined to protect Spencer from his past and the life he has been thrust into with no chance of leaving, he keeps his feelings for her to himself.  Spencer adores Dalton and knows when to push him and when to give him space. Her love for him unconditional but when she questions the depths of his feelings for her she is taken on a ride she won't forget.  Alike in more ways than they know, when their truths are revealed it solidifies their bond connecting them on levels deeper than the physical.  But when outside forces threaten what you value more than life itself can you sacrifice your own happiness for a greater good?  Can one survive being separated from the one person that allows them to breathe? Will time and distance be friend or foe? All great questions that you too can have answered once you read Under the Influence. Make sure to grab your copy today and if Lb Simmons is a new author to you I suggest you catch up. I know that will be awaiting whatever she has coming next regardless of when or what it may be.

Dalton Greer and Spencer Locke have been best friends since they were very young, seeing in each other a safe place, the other half to each other. But Dalton is hiding the truth of his life from Spencer, a life that will ultimately bring devastation and division in its wake, and will test the love that has grown between them. What makes a book a 5-star read for me? It has to grab me from the minute I start reading, to be a read that I can't put down, that keeps me from doing anything else until I finish. And it will be the book that evokes emotion, that brings out all of the feels, running the gamut from joy to tears to angst. Under the Influence has all of this and more. OMGoodness, L.B. Simmons, you've gone and done it. Nine percent into this book, and I was crying. You had me for the duration, and I had only made it through the first couple of chapters. I was hooked on Spencer's and Dalton's story from the very beginning, and it just never stopped. Both Dalton and Spencer have experienced the worst that life has to offer a child, and so find themselves irrevocably drawn to each other. But while Spencer has been able to move forward, Dalton has hardened himself, not allowing himself to love anyone. "I find myself utterly fascinated, awestruck even, that there are people actually capable of truly loving someone without wondering when and how they will be betrayed. However, the knowledge of their existence also saddens me because the cold reality is, I will never know that type of love." Dalton breaks my heart. Capable of so much more than he has allowed his circumstance to dictate, he has closed himself off from feeling anything for anyone, except for Spencer, and for his friend, Rat. Just as he allows himself to admit his feelings for Spencer, he is faced with the ultimate loss, a loss that will completely alter the course of his, and Spencer's, life. And Spencer shines, just beautifully exemplifies what true love is all about, in accepting Dalton, with all of his flaws, and loving him, perhaps more, because of them. Under the Influence is ultimately a story about facing our demons and emerging stronger on the other side. L.B. Simmons has done an amazing job of crafting a book filled with characters that are flawed, yet redeemable, capable of love even when they don't realize it, and stronger than the sum of their fears. This is absolutely one of the best books that I have read this year, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Filled with joy, pain, intrigue, and a healthy dose of passion, Under the Influence gets 5+ 'I can't put this book down to save my life' stars from me. Do yourself a favor and add this to your TBR.

Oh gosh, I don't know where to start! This book was amazing! I was purposely reading really slow just so that it didn't end! I was on edge from beginning to end! I really don't think I have any nails left!! The unconditional love of Dalton & Spencer is something so special that it's hard to even imagine! Dalton is stuck in a life that he was thrown into. A life that feed him for years & because of this there's only one way out. Dalton & Spencer's love is electric! Until her birthday, when he did what he had to do to protect her! MY. Heart. Shattered. This book is so freaken intense! Dalton makes the ultimate sacrifice for someone you love but is it enough? Can he protect Spencer from the devil? Words can not describe how raw & intense this unconventional love story is! It's a true testament of how we should love someone even though most of the book was NOT pretty or easy to watch unfold! It did leave me with hope that love will prevail & that the devil will not win! How much would YOU sacrifice for the one You love?

It is and incredible journey of long lasting friendships and second chances; because when you find your one true "one" you just know and will do anything to make it a forever one! I am forever in awe of L.B. Simmons. She is one of my go-to authors and I know that when I take the time to read one of her books, I will be grateful once again that I was fortunate enough to discover her work. With Under the Influence, I am again in complete and utter love with this author's words. Dalton Greer and Spencer Locke. Childhood friends who are completely loyal to each other. Finally admitting feelings for each other as young adults and then torn apart by secrets too dangerous to share. Watching as each of them still cling to hope that someday they will be together again, but never really knowing if that dream will come true. Oh my. What a story! What started out as a simply touching young romance blooms into much more than I ever expected. This tale of painful separation, acceptance of almost impossible circumstances had me from the very first pages. My heart was torn apart by what could have been and then put back together by what still might be possible. Even when the impossible seemed to be in control. This beautiful journey of Dalton and Spencer kept me completely captivated. The author took me through a wild ride of emotions and I enjoyed every single one. There were times of uncertainty that had me more than anxious but the way the thoughts and feelings that each of them had were captured, more than made up for it. The clever use of written communication felt more honest and more open and I loved every word. The characters of Dalton and Spencer are brilliantly written and their personalities were a pleasure to read. You can't help but fall in love with Dalton's sense of loyalty and selflessness and Spencer's bravado and determination. The secondary characters of Cassie, Rat, Deborah and Kirk are the perfect 'family' that our couple is fortunate to have in their lives. Together this crew is unstoppable and the pure joy each can find in even the most dire situation made me smile. This is not a story that is easy. Dalton and Spencer fight daily with both inner demons and outside forces that threaten to keep their HEA from ever happening. There were times when I honestly didn't know how it would all turn out and that kept me riveted. This is a book NOT to be missed. You will fall in love with these well written and true characters. An absolute gorgeous story that I won't soon forget. And neither will you. A huge 5+++ stars for a stellar story from one incredible author.
