Overview

Under the Skin by Michel Faber

Now a Major Motion Picture Starring Scarlett Johansson

"A wonderful book - painful, lyrical, frightening, brilliant . . . I couldn't put it down."—Kate Atkinson

"The fantastic is so nicely played against the day-to-day that one feels the strangeness of both . . . A remarkable novel." – The New York Times

"Alternately gorgeous and terrifying, lyrical and brutal, Under the Skin compels and teases . . . Satisfying and successful." —Newsday

In this haunting, entrancing novel, Michel Faber introduces us to Isserley, a female driver who cruises the Scottish Highlands picking up hitchhikers. Scarred and awkward, yet strangely erotic and threatening, she listens to her hitchhikers as they open up to her, revealing clues about who might miss them if they should disappear. Under the Skin takes us on a heart-thumping ride through dangerous territory—our own moral instincts and the boundaries of compassion.

Perhaps this book is best when you have no idea what it is about (as I didn't). This books fits into no category, or maybe all of them. Deep social overtones, but not preachy. I hate reviews that ruin the story, so I'll just say: love, adventure, horror, hints of sci-fi. Check it out!

The theme and general plot have been visited more than a few times with varying degrees of success. The ending was predictable. BUT, I could NOT put it down. It was so well written, at times poetic in nature, and it pulled me into the plight of the characters seemingly effortlessly-no mean feat in this day of literary excess. A GREAT story of a classic theme.

I thought the book started slowly and I found myself losing interest quickly. I don't remember the exact sentence where the book turned a corner, but I held on for a wild ride. No brief review or excerpt would give a hint to what this book is really about. I finished the book in less than 24 hours... I could not put it down.

M. Faber has created a fascinating and enduring character in Isserly. She accepts her lot in life and indeed is even grateful for it knowing she could be much worse off. Yet there comes a time when she begins to question, learn and grow. She finds that accepting is no longer enough, she must know more and it changes her to the core. This story, and this character, will stick with you long after you're done with it. M. Faber has created a world beyond our comprehension with an edge of normalcy that's compelling. It's like a strange nightmare that changes your mood for days.

Nothing like the movie, but in its own way still thought provoking.

Unforgettable. Strange yet seductive. Deftly paced and well-plotted. A+

One of the best books i've ever read. The look of the writer really goes deeply 'under the skin' touching and overturning the most hidden and unapproachable paths in human soul. The way he goes smoothly and suddently shocks you in the most unexpected moment, shows clearly of a genius, provoking pen.

NOT VERY ORIGINAL. SIMILAR PREMISE IN AN OLD TWILIGHT ZONE. MORAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES ARE MASKED BY THE BORING CHARACTERS AND ABSENCE OF SUBSTANIVE DETAILS. I READ IT IN ABOUT ONE DAY AND WAS GLAD TO DONE. EXPECTED MORE IN THE END BUT IT LEFT ME FLAY AND DISAPPOINTED. I THINK THE AUTHOR WANTED TO STAKE A MORAL POSITION BUT ALSO WRITE GRUESOME BLOODY THRILLER. IN SUM, POINTLESS READING. THAT HAPPENS.
