I love to use Azar's books along with the Grammar in Use series. I introduce the material using Grammar in Use, then move on to Azar's book to give the students a chance to use real world English. Azar provides a nice combination of oral lessons, fill in the blank, correct the errors, and many other exercises. What I like best about her books is, she doesn't shy away from complex, confusing constructs. This is what makes the English feel much more real. Azar provides very thorough explanations, but sometimes the thoroughness confuses my students. Grammar in Use is simplified, but doesn't always include the many variations that occur in the real language. There have been times when I've started a student out on the Azar book only to discover it is too difficult for them. I then take them back to Grammar in Use, instruct them on the different parts of speech they will need and then go back to the Azar book. When they see that they can now handle the more difficult material, they glow.

This is a great book to use if you're really looking to learn the English language. It has a lot of exercises you can use to practice with along with excellent explanations for verb tenses and word usage.

It's a good book, has many rules and tips to learn. There are many exercises as well. To be outstanding, it should probably have less exercises and more writing examples.
