I got this book as a child, and after the first slow-ish chapter, I became entranced with Elizabeth/Betsy's journey through her own childhood. I was thrilled to introduce my daughter to the book as well, years later. Understood Betsy is a charming book of a different era. It offers a glimpse into what it was life was like in the "olden days", and goes to show that some things don't change....particularly fear of the unknown. Elizabeth becomes Betsy through the story, first by name only, and later by learning courage, kindness, and leadership.
