This charming collection of very personal stories by artist Jennifer Hayden serves up motherhood and family drama with a twist. Hayden, the married mother of a son and daughter, looks at domestic life in all its ups and downs. Often, she is rolling her eyes or huffing impatiently at her children, only to, at the next moment, turn sentimental. She makes each panel count, expertly combining her art and her words to create a masterpiece that is much greater than the sum of its parts. Her drawings capture goddesses and the basics of life in a way that's familiar, yet doesn't succumb to cliches about motherhood (meaning, there's plenty of cursing). This book is definitely one I will reread, and I look forward to more of Hayden's work.
