Overview

Uneasy Lies the Crown, A Novel of Owain Glyndwr by N. Gemini Sasson

For centuries, the bards have sung of King Arthur's return, but is this reluctant warrior prince the answer to those prophecies?

In the year 1399, Welsh nobleman Owain Glyndwr is living out a peaceful gentleman's life in the Dee Valley of Wales with his wife Margaret and their eleven children. But when Henry of Bolingbroke usurps the throne of England from his cousin Richard II, that tranquility is forever shattered. What starts as a feud with a neighboring English lord over a strip of land evolves into something greater--a fight for the very independence of Wales.

After a harrowing encounter on the misty slopes of Cadair Idris, the English knight Harry Hotspur offers Owain a pact he cannot resist.

Peace, however, comes with a heavy price. As tragedies mount and temptations loom, Owain questions whether he can fulfill the prophecies and lead his people to freedom without destroying those around him.

Uneasy Lies the Crown, set amidst a backdrop of medieval war and knights engaged in battle, is the story of Owain Glyndwr, the last Welsh Prince of Wales.

Long a student of Celtic history, I always had a desire to know more of the traditions of the Welsh people and their nation. I mostly blame myself for failing until now, in finding the story of Owain Glyndwr, the last true Prince of Wales. Author Sasson has produced a remarkably readable account of his long struggle to gain Welsh independence from England. Well titled, It is a story of bravery, honor and decency as much as a story of the un-ease of an honest, noble man, raised up by forces out of his control, to lead a rebellion and assume a crown that was not his aim to ever wear. With the skill of a master storyteller, Sasson's writing is straightforward and accessible, with honest characters set into the flinty hardness and treachery of their times. Whether Owain's quest ultimately failed or not remains a question, as his blood still flows in Welsh veins and his people still take pride in his memory -- all the way to London. As a fan of George RR Martin's fantasy work also, waiting patiently for his next book set in Westeros to be released, I found Sasson's Glyndwr stories, based upon historic record, to be as satisfying as any of The Song of Fire and Ices tales. So in addition to a recommendation to others interested in the historic record, I can make a hearty suggestion for other long suffering Martin fantasy fans to discover N. Gemini Sasson's writing. It will surprise you, sustain you and hold you captive.
