I loved this story so much that I bought the boxed set. The characters and storyline in "Unexpected Gifts was that moving for me and I can't wait to read the other ones in the series. I am not one to wax on and retell the book, you will need to read it yourself to decide if I'm good in my assessment.

Elena Aitken has done it again for me….given me a perfect book to ready during the holidays. She has become one of my very favorite  authors because her books never fail to entertain me. Unexpected Gifts takes place in Castle Mountain Lodge where some of her books do  as well but this is a stand-alone. The story is about a woman, Andi, who is not a fan of Christmas who takes advantage of an opportunity to stay at Castle Mountain Lodge. Accommodations are messed up and she ends up staying in a cabin with a man named Colin. Colin does his best to make Andi like Christmas and the story and romance goes ones. The character's are well written and believable. There is humor and a little sadness all  wrapped up in this book. It’s a great story to read especially during the holiday season. For me Unexpected Gifts was a perfect gift to me by author Elena Aitken.

A very quick read. Although it is a fast story, this is NOT a cliffhanger! I enjoyed the development of the story and the topping was the short story that was the icing on the cake! I hope you give this book a try. I believe you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Unexpected Gifts starts with Andi wanting to get away for Christmas because the relatives she planned on being with decided to go away at the last minute. She doesn't like Christmas so is quite content to go to a lodge so she could spend Christmas alone.  Then we meet Colin who has been in the tropics for many years and this year decides he wants to come back and spend Christmas in the snow instead of on a beach.  Andi and Colin end up at the same Canadian lodge but Andi doesn't have a room.  She had met Colin briefly a long time ago so when he offers to let her use one of the bedrooms in his villa, she agrees.  The blizzard helps her make the decision since she can't go anywhere anyway.   When Colin finds out that Andi doesn't like Christmas he decides to sign them up for activities the lodge has arranged so that Andi will start to like Christmas. Aitken is a very illustrative writer who creates an entire world for her audience to get lost in. Every aspect of this novel is fully developed in a manner that you can’t help but picture. The descriptions are so clear that the reader can picture the Christmas lights, feel the snow falling and smell the hot chocolate. I liked at they are instantly attracted to each other, but neither wants a relationship.  It adds some suspense to the novel.  And it was terrific how Colin decided a relationship with Andi may not be too bad stepped up to the challenge of making her see this too. I loved the story line and the setting in a Canadian mountain lodge with all of the Christmas festivities.  I really enjoyed this book.  It is a warm Christmas story and made me smile.

Fast read, but worth it!

While the idea behind this story was good there were a few things that were not. The author writes that Andi is giving her three year old step-brothers drum kits for Christmas. This age is much too young for drum kits unless her aim is to punish her father's new family and frustrate the boys. In another sentence the author writes that Andi "wore a dress that showed off all of her assets." This is crude even if from the man's perspective making it sound as if he only saw her physically and disregarded all else. After dining a very upscale restaurant Andi "leans back in her chair and stretches" thus pulling her dress tight over her breasts. We're given the impression previously that Andi is mannerly and refined. This is not mannerly or refined. A nice addition is the short story Unexpected Ending after the main story.

Read this 115 page short story almost not putting book down. Loved that the good guy got the girl & sleeze got the boot. Too quick of an ending for me, needed an epilogue to get 5 stars. Read it you will enjoy it. GJRA
